From a purely financial perspective I think buying a used washer/dryer pair for around $500 would be the best bet, however I’d have to find someone to deliver them and help me move them upstairs so that’s a big factor as well. If I buy a new pair do they usually do free delivery/installation?
If you hire professional movers just have them pick up your used pre-purchased washer/dryer on the day of the move. Our move included some unused stuff we had in an offsite storage locker. Worked out just fine.

We used these guys when we moved from Point Loma to Bay Park in late 2007. They did a great job.
As for your washer and dryer, I’d buy a nice set with a warranty from a recent foreclosure. Here’s an example: http://sandiego.craigslist.org/ssd/hsh/1068129242.html

You could’ve submitted a backup offer for a few thousand over the accepted price. The seller would’ve known your offer was available if the buyer tried to jerk them around during the escrow process.
