I purchased an SFR in 1989 and it dropped in value until 1994. Around 1991 they reassessed it to about 20% below what I paid without me making a request. Around 1996 they bumped it back up to what it would have been. This was in Riverside Cty.

BloatParticipantI didn’t compare Teachers to Realtors, but as a whole I’ve read Realtors are low paid, but this is skewed by part-timers and the last 5 years, etc, so, I don’t have the facts to comment. I know the last few years have been very good and the shake-out of the undeserving is way overdue. I see the NAR as their union, effectively fixing commissions, etc.
I’m not sure of the investment to become a teacher. My best friend is one: 4 years at CSU + credential = job. Low pay to start like most other jobs. He agrees with me now that he makes $70k after 15 years & he doesn’t work much at home. You have a point regarding gangs, etc. The good teachers who can make a difference in the inner-city deserve $bonus, but no, the union won’t let that happen (which is my point).
No, I didn’t mention Cops because I think they deserve more. Firefighters in one sentence: Work three days a week, sleep at work, eat at work, goof off at work, great benefits, work all the ot you want, make +$100k, retire after 20 years AND you can work another job at the same time.
ftr: I’m a CPA and I do take work home (when I’m working)

BloatParticipantjpinpb (on Teacher pay),
I think Teachers used to be underpaid and they still like you to believe it, but no more. The acid test to know if a profession is overpaid is the existence and strengh of a union. Unions exist to achieve above market wages & benefits.
I know its all been said: Teachers work 9 months, get 3 weeks of at Xmas, 2 weeks off at Easter, plus about 15 more holidays. Yet they average +$60k, plus great benefits, including fully paid health for the whole family. Not bad for part-time? What other profession can claim it so good? Oh, and you can’t get fired ! Go tell your boss this is what you want and see what happens.
I am generalizing. The best should make more, incentive pay for results, the worst should be concerned about loosing their job.
Now, how about firefighters and our tax dollars?
(have I gone off-topic yet?)
