What? Are you telling me that if I just “like” a few million people, it won’t allow me to retire? Really? I swear I was told by a lot of young lads, that’s all they wanted to do as job!
Speaking of GM… GM pulls out of facebook as an advertising medium…
GM says Facebook ads not effective, pulls campaign ahead of IPO
Heh heh heh. Unfortunately for TPTB some of us still remember getting snookered in this three-card Monty game back in the late ’90s. What was that old Who song, “Won’t get fooled again?”

Saverin is a very good example of how your policies would work. He took HIS money and took it out of the U.S. If you want him to stay here, it has to be attractive for his to stay. It wasn’t. And nothing you have advocated would change that. In fact, they would make it worse.
Actually he is taking EVERYONE ELSE’S MONEY out of the country since he is one of the earliest participants in the FB Ponzi scheme. It has been promoted and pushed by TPTB from day one as an epic, massive classic pump-and-dump operation. People are so stupid now that they can’t even see these things when they’re right in front of their face as plain as day. FB is pets.com rev. 2. It’s kozmo.com done correctly, where the insiders get the loot and retire to their private islands and megayachts while everyone else turns down the heat and eats government cheese to make it through another cold winter.
Do you really think that it’s a coincidence that FB came from Harvard? Harvard’s CS department is nothing special. Social networking was a well-established and well-understood technology by the time FB came out. It had many competitors, both proprietary and open-source. There is a reason that FB didn’t come out of a great CS school like Urbana-Champaign or Berkeley. The proper connections don’t exist at those places…

Companies like FB don’t create very many jobs, and those that they do create are highly centralized in already overdeveloped areas like SV. We don’t need any new FBs or MySpaces or GeoCities, etc… These things come and go like dandelions. Now that FB has IPOed and everyone’s grandmother is on it, it has reached its apogee and will be systematically looted by those who got in at the early stages of the Ponzi scheme. Look for it to be purchased by NBC for $1B in about 5 years.
What we need is a new GM, a new Apple, or a new IBM. We won’t get those however since they are all being created overseas.

Evolution or Intelligent Design? #743749blahblahblahParticipant

[…] comparing this issue to slavery, women’s suffrage, or civil rights belittles the severity and importance of those issues in American history.
Yes and no. Although women and blacks are much bigger percentages of the population than gays, gays are hardly an insignificant fringe group. Their numbers are probably in the millions.
Dude, I agree with you on the issue but again — slavery was the systematic deprivation of human rights of innocent people. MILLIONS OF INNOCENT PEOPLE WERE TORTURED, WORKED TO DEATH, AND MURDERED.
Gay marriage allows couples to ensure orderly transfer of property ownership upon a partner’s death, the ability for partners to make medical decisions, parental decisions, etc… Important stuff, yes! But equating the lack of these rights to something as serious and horrific as slavery is just silly.
Once again, I agree with you on this issue but if you want to make an argument to try to sway people’s opinion, do not bring up slavery, suffrage, etc… because it’s not a good argument. There are plenty of good arguments in support of gay marriage.
May 14, 2012 at 8:28 AM in reply to: OT – Gay Marriage. Divisive or Non-Issue? Evolution or Intelligent Design? #743744blahblahblahParticipant
Yes, we’ve got better things to talk about right now:
1858: “Of course slavery is cruel, but we’ve got a continent to tame, railroads to build, and we are right in the midst of an economic panic…”
1918: “Sorry ladies, I agree you should be allowed to vote, but we’re right in the middle of this Great War and this flu pandemic …”
1963: “Yes, Civil Rights are important, but the Soviet threat is looming, our president has just been assassinated, and we’ve got a war brewing in Southeast Asia…”
There’s always a better time to help the people who don’t really matter anyway.
FWIW I support the right of gay couples to marry. However, comparing this issue to slavery, women’s suffrage, or civil rights belittles the severity and importance of those issues in American history.
Gay marriage affects a very small minority of people. To them it is very serious, and we all understand that and I believe most of us support the right for all to marry. But let’s get real, we are not talking wholesale deprivation of personal liberty (slavery), voting rights (Jim Crow/women’s suffrage), or civil rights here.
I wonder if MLK would have been a gay marriage supporter? He was a Baptist minister, after all — I’m guessing probably not.

Almost everyone over 30 is a lost cause, they will continue either blaming the other side for every problem under the sun or they will just adopt the “they’re all crooks but I’ve got my nice house in CV and my stocks are doing great so I don’t care” attitude. Most of the people on this site are at the top end in terms of intelligence and ability and haven’t been hit with the reality that 99% of the world lives in — yet. They sit and watch Jon Stewart and giggle about the world falling apart on their giant TVs and feel superior to everyone around them. If they drive an SUV they feel superior to the Prius driver, and vice versa. Most posters here live in tiny insulated bubbles of soft comfort.
Young people are seeing through the lies in greater numbers than ever. There are fewer and fewer people buying them each generation. The charade will not last much longer.
There weren’t a lot of old people at the Berlin Wall when it came down. Few over 30 left their houses, most stayed indoors as they were instructed to and watched TV to see what was happening.

The best idea from above is to say that it is in a trust and see how fast she disappears. You might also have your friend hire a PI to do a background check just for fun. 10 to 1 he doesn’t know her real name.

Now let me ask you a question. What would you have done if you were in the cops’ situation? A man twice as strong as you wants to attack you. He wants to hurt you. If you go in and try and restrain him, there’s a very good chance he’ll get your gun and shoot you. Now your children are fatherless. What would you do?
You’re a cop. You draw your sidearm and aim. He comes at you, you drop him. 99% of the time he will go down on the ground without a fight and be on his way to jail. No beatings necessary. And if he is that 1% well then he probably deserves the street justice.
blahblahblahParticipant

Apparently the 911 dispatcher asked Zimmerman the race of Martin. NBC edited the request out from the transcript so it looked like Zimmerman just offered up Martin’s race.
Call transcript:
Zimmerman: This guy looks like he’s up to no good. Or he’s on drugs or something. It’s raining and he’s just walking around, looking about.Dispatcher: OK, and this guy — is he black, white or Hispanic?
Zimmerman: He looks black.
NBC’s spliced audio version:
Zimmerman: This guy looks like he’s up to no good. He looks black.
This thing stinks to high heaven. As I pointed out earlier, another unarmed black teenager was murdered by cops in Sharpton’s hometown of NYC. He doesn’t protest one peep and most people have never heard the story. Now we have this other murder 2 months later and all of a sudden it’s national news and his mug is on every TV screen from coast to coast. And NBC is now caught red-handed modifying reality in an effort to sway opinion.
The question is — why now and why are they promoting this so much? Kids are dying in poor neighborhoods every day and it doesn’t make news. It’s like they are deliberately trying to stir something up…
blahblahblahParticipantI find this story fascinating. Just two months ago, an unarmed teenager was gunned down and murdered in his own apartment by plainclothes cops in NYC. Even though Al Sharpton lives there, he wasn’t holding rallies afterwards. But now he’s jetting down to Florida and lecturing us all about injustice.
Why this particular case and why now? I don’t believe it’s because anyone in any position of power actually cares one whit about that poor young man or his family.

Having driven both the Prius and the TDI I know I’d rather drive the TDI, but that’s a personal choice.
The Prius is not an exciting car to drive. I like the mileage but driving it is a little ho-hum. Actually really ho-hum, it just sort of floats along.
I like the TDI idea because the cars are usually cooler and more fun to drive. I really like the Audi TDI mini-SUV thingy but it costs a mint so no thanks. I am hoping that Mazda will put the new Sky-D turbo diesel in the Mazda 3 at some point, that would be a cool fun-to-drive car that gets pretty good mileage.
blahblahblahParticipant
Your high milelage presumption is interesting svelte, as Prius gas mileage on the highway isn’t all that great. Their biggest advantage is in stop-start driving. It has always been my contention that the average Prius driver would get better mileage and thus less environmental impact from a Jetta diesel. Your numbers might support that. I wonder if we can get HOV stickers for diesels? (Ha Ha)
Our Prius averaged over 45mpg on a recent round trip to Vegas, including over all of the hills and through lots of wind. Turbo diesels do get good long distance mileage but the majority of people drive most of their miles in daily commutes through start/stop traffic. Popular Mechanics did a comparison of the Jetta TDI and the Prius that demonstrates this well. Yes the TDI performed better on the highway — by .6mpg. In city driving the Prius beat the Jetta TDI by 12.7mpg and again, that’s where most of us do most of our driving.
Also, the yellow stickers are no longer available. If you want to drive solo in the HOV lane you’re going to need to go electric.
