The healthcare changes won’t likely affect me much directly, but I can’t help but to be fascinated watching this whole thing unfold.
We are watching history in the making. Has our government ever done something so wrong, on such a large scale?
I’d say the the Vietnam War was the biggest fraud in American history. Prohibition was huge, and a fraud of sorts. Anything else on that scale? The unraveling of ACA could easily be the biggest policy fuckup in American history as measured by the size of the population impacted.
March 10, 2017 at 2:15 PM #805931FlyerInHiGuestI so very much agree.
I also agree with your post on the other thread about basic universal income such as social security, but progress is not one continuous line. The arc is history is long and bends towards justice, but there are sometimes serious setbacks.
I think Iraq and the war on terror are worse than Vietnam in terms of costs. Vietnam feels worse because we had the draft and we fought a conventional war that caused 50k American deaths. Now we have a volunteer military and technology.
But Iraq and the war on terror will last decades and we are fighting ennemies of our own making. Most of the energy of the government is spent on terrorism and when there’s none, Republicans conjure up new threats.
Philosophically, conservatives are supposed to believe that there are risks in a free society. But when it comes to terrorism, and law and order generally, they use the issues to bludgeon us and impose authoritarianism.
March 10, 2017 at 2:50 PM #805932FlyerInHiGuestThe war on drugs is also a huge fraud. It created crimes, criminals and poverty.
Now rural areas are suffering the same drug problems the inner cities suffered. While states like California are legalizing medical and recreational marijuana, the red states are doubling down on the war on drugs and asset forfeitures to fund the police state.Private prison stocks experienced a nice run up after Trump’s election.

I didn’t think of that one. And it’s a biggie.

Might need something like this to create the backlash needed for true universal care…

The real biggie out of it is the militarization of the police funded by civil asset forfeiture that presumes guilt. They take your assets and you have to prove them innocent.
March 11, 2017 at 10:00 AM #805939spdrunParticipantAnd the current piece of white trash in the AG’s office is a big fan. At least Eric Holder made an effort to fight it.
March 11, 2017 at 1:08 PM #805940FlyerInHiGuestI think that Jeff sessions will go after states like california that made marijuana legal. So much for states’ rights.
March 11, 2017 at 6:16 PM #805942FlyerInHiGuestSo the county with the shortest life expectancy in the nation voted overwhelmingly for Trump. WTF!?
Oh well, these guys are hopeless…. better put resources supporting refugees, new immigrants and the coastal working classes.https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/national/west-virginia-tug-river-obamacare/?hpid=hp_hp-more-top-stories_tugriver826pm%3Ahomepage%2Fstory
They are poor, sick and voted for Trump. What will happen to them without Obamacare?March 12, 2017 at 6:41 AM #805949ocrenterParticipant
So the county with the shortest life expectancy in the nation voted overwhelmingly for Trump. WTF!?

They are poor, sick and voted for Trump. What will happen to them without Obamacare?
That’s well established. I have met several folks who directly benefited from the ACA yet continue to wish for its repeal.
You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink. Especially if the person that led to horse to water was black.
But if he had a job that provided health insurance, he reasoned, he wouldn’t need Medicaid anyway, so he voted for Trump, along with 74 percent of McDowell County.
That’s the nutshell, they’d rather have a job and buy their own than get the government handout.
They still got sold by Trump, just like any politician.
March 12, 2017 at 9:27 AM #805952FlyerInHiGuestSmall employers under 50 employees don’t usually provide health insurance. Heck, independent doctor’s offices don’t even provide health insurance.
I think the stats show 7% of insured are on Obamacare, not including Medicaid expansion.I doubt the small family farm privodes health insurance.
The Black dude leading the horse to water is funny. My horse loves to drink and get hosed off after a long ride, haha… horses only trust their riders. You have to build a relationship with them. They are suspicious of unknowns and will throw off novice riders.
March 14, 2017 at 8:23 AM #806015FlyerInHiGuestGrant County, NE. Got health care, buddy?
Yet, another place where people are on the dole, but where nationalism and xenophobia won they day. I guess they’d rather work for the mafia boss who pays shit than take charity from the black dude.
March 24, 2017 at 2:40 PM #806120AnonymousGuest….aaaand of course they are blaming Democrats:
Obmacare is going to get even worse
…then why didn’t you repeal it?
Trump calls on Democrats to work with him on a “real health care bill”
…they did. Eight years ago. It’s called ACA.
Ryan says it is difficult moving from an opposition party to a governing party: “We’re feeling those growing pains today.”
Yes, Mr. second-most powerful person in all of government. Governing is difficult.
