CAR, wish I had your faith, but I fear that if most of the citizenry started to design their own houses, it would be worse than what most of the big developers are doing. They’d have to start a new magazine: “Architectural InDIGESTion” (yeah, I know…that’s really bad. But it’s late in the day here in the east).
Call me a snob. But trust me on this one. If you want to get an idea of what happens when people have a construction loan, a yen to be a “designer”, and a little time on their hands, click on the link: http://homesoftherich.net/2009/06/inside-teresa-giudices-new-jersey-mansion.html
*Don’t miss the video house tour halfway down the page. See something you just gotta have? Link to the catalog for the October 3 bankruptcy auction:

Funny. π You’d be surprised how many spec houses around here try to look just like that.
Nothing says “tacky” quite like this does:
http://www.ajwillnerauctions.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=home.viewItem&AuctionID=559&ItemID=15
——————-Yes, I try to have faith in my fellow (wo)man. π
There are lots of beautiful custom homes in some of the older neighborhoods. Wouldn’t it be great if we could get back to those standards again?

Wish we had more houses down here like that to choose from instead of one tacky, two-story, McStucco box after another.
Lord, please, please, please make these big developers/builders die off and allow people to buy their own lots and build their own custom homes again! Amen.
eavesdropper, your NJ Mcmansion is simply gaudy. It’s like an impersonal “cavern” with a few choice “empty” built-ins. It may as well be showcased on “Jersey Shore,” a favorite party-animal show of the current HS set.
CAR, you MUST review the link below. I think you would really appreciate all the love that went into true, authentic mid-century design. This architect is now deceased, but his voluminous works live on in SoCal.
http://www.modernsandiego.com/SimBruceRichards.html
His first house for his family IS STILL for sale in Pt. Loma:
http://www.sdlookup.com/MLS-100031293-977_Albion_St_San_Diego_CA_92106
I realize this home is not located in your area of interest but Sim Bruce Richards was one of the original “taliesins” of Frank Lloyd Wright (apprentices). There are a few more like him throughout the country but it takes a special buyer to appreciate all the work that has gone into the design of these homes!
Here’s another local link to peruse for local mid-century modern architecture. Enjoy!!

————-Without a doubt, our choice of location means we don’t have the housing stock like you have down south, or even in Vista & Escondido.
I love the low-slung, sexy, understated elegance found in many houses built in the ~1930-1970 period.
Looking at those pictures makes me feel like a kid in a candy store. Thanks for the links, BG! π

You’re welcome! You never know what Mercer York is/will be peddling so you should check back from time to time :=)
CAR, both of your links (above) are the same, but that is truly a lot of “bang for the buck” in a property! Just the materials in the living/dining area alone are probably worth the purchase price! This type of house could handle the richest fabrics and boldest colors and designs of upholstery, drapery and rugs because of its neutral and very fine craftsmanship throughout. It is very large and could be “cavern-like” unless the owner had the $$ to decorate it properly.

AK, I am seriously considering retiring in Norcal. I don’t think the popular “San Rafael” listing you posted here is subject to fumes from “the 101”.
True the house itself is a couple of miles from the freeway. But the 101 itself is a frickin nightmare. That much hasn’t changed since I was a kid :)
AK, are you referring to this leg of the 101 or the lo-o-o-o-ong stretch of it south of SF? There aren’t near as many people coming back and forth across the Golden Gate Bridge to work in the City as there are traveling back and forth through SV. A large percentage of the population of Marin Co. is “retired.”
I see the portions of Hwy 101 on either side of the City as two different animals.
