Why americans do not save

So here we go again, the US government has said inflation is under control and will average 2% through next year. This will of course allow the FED to further reduce interest rates which are already a losing proposition. Real inflation is closer to 10% than 2% and saving at a 4% or 5 % rate of interest loses the saver about 6% – or so in buying power each year.

The people who are paying for the bail out of Wall Street are the “thrifty” American’s and foreigners who dutifully save their money and lose 6% for the privilege. For years I have listened to the talking heads proclaim that the lack of savings by Americans is a “moral short fall” rather than a function of FED policy. If interest rates were where they belong, 12 or 13%, you can bet savings rates would be higher.

With FED policy keeping real interest rates of return negative, they effectively take from the saver, and give to the very wealthy.
Fortunately, this time they are fleecing the Chinese and Europeans worse than us, but only because our savings rates are so low.

BUUUUUUT it’s hard to save when there is these great prices on LCD TVs at Costco and I always need something!! Like a new Norelco shavers, that mop thing that cleans your car without water oh and those cameras you install all around your house to spy on your guest!! My those Granite rock speakers are cool too…SO hard to choose but wait why should I concern myself with the price? Put it on the card..
Because there’s nothing in my savings thats why!

Besides inflation there is also the devaluation of the dollar. Why save when those savings will be worth nothing in 3 years?

bubba, I’ve saved diligently for over 35 years, never taking much risk (=banks and money markets) until very recently. It’s been a losing proposition over the long haul and even in different countries, net of inflation, taxes, and expenses. I would definitely advise you and NeetaT and others that taking no risk is just a loser in the long run.

If and when enough savers like us desert low risk investments, they might actually pay a positive return. Don’t hold your breath!
