When to buy and where?

I am looking to buy a home next year possibly to save on taxes and have my own place. Would it be better to wait longer than the end of 2009? I am not sure if prices will drop longer into 2010 or not with the massive stimulus packages the government is giving away or not. I am getting killed on my taxes and would consider states outside of California that have decent weather if San Diego is a bad bet. I just read of even more layoffs in the tech sector the other day from the San Diego Business Journal with Veoh and other firms planning to cut staff.

I think the question is more appropriate to ask “where then when” not “when and where”. Once you know where, you can figure out when as the clock is different for various locales. I’ll take heat but i’ll say it anyway. It’s not just where and when but just importantly what. Finding a house oyu actually like is much harder than most piggies think. If I was looking in a desireable locale, I would be looking in earnest this coming Summer and be ready to pull the trigger between Late September and mid-December if I found something I loved that seemed to be a great value for the current market at the time.

Believe me, I know how hard it is to wait. I hate living in my rental house. When ever I’m tempted to buy I take a look at my favorite graph. It really puts into perspective how far down we have to go.

That graph ends in 2001!!!! Please post an updated graph which shows how far we have come down already. Sure we have room to go but that graph tells a very incomplete story.
