ParticipantAh come on! Certainly someone besides me must recognize this thing. It’s a sock dryer! It hooks onto the inside of the stove, and you put your socks on it, turn the stove on low, and in ten to fifteen minutes your socks are dry and toasted warm. ‘Course this isn’t very useful in San Diego, but in Minnesota, when you come in from the snow with damp socks, this is the greatest thing.

Participant
The prior homeowner was a construction worker and I beleive he drove a back hoe. Perhaps it was some sort of removable padded backrest for his backhoe.
I was thinking along the lines of a motorcycle backrest, but this frame is so square and boxy I started to discount that idea.
A backhoe makes more sense…they don’t spend much time making backhoe seats look sexy.

!!
Minnesotans put socks in their stove?
Not sure if you’re pulling our leg, but it certainly could be a drying rack. Google “sweater drying rack” or “metal drying rack”, click the Images option and similar-looking contraptions appear.
Great eyes, Xbox!
