After living (renting a small guest house) in Hope Ranch-Santa Barbara for the last 18 months my wife and I will be moving this Thursday to the Pine Mountain Club area:http://www.pinemountainclub.net/
we found a 3800 sq ft home built in 2006 for $1650/month, unreal! We have a year lease and if we like the area we may purchase, prices and fallen at least 50%. So I will let you know how life is like up in the mountains.September 27, 2010 at 2:29 PM #609876desmondParticipantAfter living (renting a small guest house) in Hope Ranch-Santa Barbara for the last 18 months my wife and I will be moving this Thursday to the Pine Mountain Club area:http://www.pinemountainclub.net/

An extra home is an expensive luxury and I doubt many would use it more than once a month. This is why you can rent vacation homes. Probably ends up being cheaper in the long run, though you don’t get to play architect.
Find 4 people to each take a weekend every month, cut your building costs 75% by sharing the burden, and allow yourself this luxury much sooner.
Just a thought.

sdduuuude, I HAD thought of this arrangement for a S. Lake Tahoe fixer property. Since it would cost many thousands of dollars per ski season to spend as much time as I would want to in a vacation rental, I thought of going in with just ONE other party (perhaps a boater-type) that would want to use it for the warmer months of the year, who was perhaps handy, as well. I would buy the materials and pay most of the utils if the other party could do most of the repairs/renovations. That’s why I would want a larger lot, so a boat could be left there, covered, year-round.
