congratulations Brian, your blind love for China have led you to a place no American have staked out previously.
despite all of our political differences, the one thing that unites all Americans is the fundamental belief that freedom of speech is a basic human right. You just managed to cross that off your list and threw that belief into the trash bin.
you do realize the very reason the pandemic is as bad as it is at this point is because of the complete lack of free speech within China and the tight power structure that regulates speech. you apparently was also unable to appreciate the irony that the whistle blowing physician had to write a confession citing the error of his ways just prior to his death.
as for wrong predictions. you always have to subtract 2% from the yearly gdp from official figures. some prior predictions looking at sudden collapse may have been wrong, but many that called for an economy mired in years of stagflation are spot on.
a lot of Chinese did buy into your point that money is freedom. but they are realizing that’s just government propaganda. Chinese government actually had propaganda stating they are the world’s LARGEST DEMOCRACY several months ago using the same point you just made. Most of the world and ethnic Chinese world outside of China just laughed and shook their heads, but apparently the propaganda did work for one person outside of China. Again, my congratulations to you on this.

So me and sign other were at La Jolla Playhouse for a concert when all the sudden sign other starts to get all sniffly because this old lady sitting next to her is wearing a cheap perfume that starts make her nose twichy. So she starts to sneeze. And this poor old lady who looks like she is in her 70ies starts to glare at us, and looks frightened. sign other totally felt bad and we leave during intermission….And I’m laughing all the way home..Sign other commenting “did you see how that lady was looking at me every single time I sneezed becuas of her cheap perfume? I heard her whispering…maybe we should move” I’m like yeah, because you clearly violated social etiquette rule S.W.A….. Sneezing While Asian.
Anyway, being the flunpersom inam who always tried to look at things at a positive angle, I was stategizng how we could use this fearto our advantage. We figured out if there’s a long line and we’re tired of waiting, we’ll whip out out our masks and start coughing while speaking Chinese….I think it might work and get the lines to scatter…..lol

And of course she’ll be so paranoid after the concert that’s she’ll schedule an appointment to see me despite feeling perfectly fine. That’s when I cough some more and tell her I spent the whole weekend with Asians folks at various Asian markets and restaurants. LOL!!!
February 10, 2020 at 6:47 AM #814679The-ShovelerParticipantInflation was already high in China but here is latest headline.
“Inflation in China runs rampant because of the outbreak”We were in Ranch-99 Saturday, did not see a lot of people wearing masks (I did not wear one either), We decided to grab something quick to eat at Sam Woo’s but there was this woman coughing fairly badly in the restaurant so we decided to go across the street to Carl’s jr. Yea I know it most likely was the flu or something LOL.

The owner of Jasmine was on TV saying his business was way down and saying the Coronavirus was impacting his business. I was thinking, no your business is down because your food there now sucks, you can tell because even before this virus, there wasn’t that many Chinese people still eatting there, and on top of that, the parking lot next to your restaurant started to charge for parking.
The sure sign of a bad Chinese restaurant is if you go in there and most of the people eatting aren’t Chinese.

This year’s flu leads to bronchitis and that horrible cough in a lot of people.
I would not be surprised that same lady with flu induced bronchitis would be rounded up and placed in one of the 2 “hospitals” they built in a week to house corona virus victims.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see many more people on that cruise ship in Japan get Coronavirus. The virus is probably all over the ship and they quarantined everyone on it. Brilliant.
February 10, 2020 at 8:45 AM #814682FlyerInHiGuestocrenter, on the economy, the beauty of math is that you can just look at the GDP today, and the GDP at a point in the past and infer the real growth rate. No reputable economist that I know has accused China of faking growth number for decades.
As far as the other stuff you say, I take it the same as what Iraqi exiles said about Iraq before we invaded. Yeah, the sources were really accurate and look at the trouble we got into.
China is not a democracy like the Philippines, on the US model. Compare the 2 economies in the last 40 years. However, China is a meritocracy in that the best do rise to the top.
Ah, Freedom. Freedom to spend money, freedom to travel, freedom to send your kids to US colleges and freedom to return. Freedom to buy Louis Vuitton and Tesla.
Yeah, the USA is a country of immigrants. just because there are Chinese Americans, or Chinese immigrants elsewehere does not necessarily follow that China is bad.
We have a lot of Irish immigrants, many came before the Celtic Tiger economy, and many still come today. But Ireland is a fine country. Many have double citizenship or family and business ties and they come and go.February 10, 2020 at 9:32 AM #814684FlyerInHiGuestAlso another thing, ocrenter, I don’t read chinese media but I do follow European media.
You have to ask yourself why China is given the red carpet at international institutions we helped create.
Here’s China state visit at APEC before Pence delivered a speech.
China also got a state visit at the G20 in Argentina, then in Panama, our sphere of influence.
Meanwhile, we get this kind of trash on American media, much worse on Fox News.
The American public is so insular and misinformed.February 10, 2020 at 10:11 AM #814686The-ShovelerParticipantI don’t want to get into a big debate here,
but a few things.
1) The USA has offered to help China with the coronavirus several times but was turned down by China, then China comes out and says we are not offering to help.
2) If Sanders wins he will be much much harder on the China than Trump (sorry to burst your bubble).

Yes. In a good way.
I know Bernie is against TPP but he’s going to have to come up with something to get Indo Pacific countries on our side. American Belt and Road? We were distracted with Afghanistan, Iraq and the Middle East while China joined WTO and expanded. And China helped us quietly go to war at the UN. Sorry to say, but we deserve what we got.
If we can’t the Phillipines firmly on our side, then all is lost in the Pacific.
February 10, 2020 at 10:52 AM #814689The-ShovelerParticipantLOL Sanders is way more an isolationist than Trump.

Until Trump gets us on a war with Iran that will cost 5x iraq.
Isolationist is not bad except we will need to bottle up our badass American pride, be less influential around the world, become a big Sweden perhaps? Not good for multinationals who need a global platform. It will be bad for the stock market and Bernie will be blamed.

Sanders ain’t gonna win.. Because you have many left leaning moderates like svelte that would either vote third party or not vote at all. Don’t even need to worry about it. And Warren is finished, just like Harris was.
.Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.It will be Pete! Not a bad choice given the field of crazies. It’s the best shot against Trump.
