You can’t get that in NYC. (And the Jersey shore waves aren’t conducive to surfing… as he discovered on a family trip there last summer.)
The surf is great in Long Island. In fact, in the winter the surf is awesome. Just need the highest mm wetsuit you can get b/c it’s freezing.
Or hop on a plane to Florida for some surf.
Why does one place have to have it all?

Good for you for having the courage of your convictions. However, and there has to be a ‘however’, there is something in what you say that is relevant and symptomatic of many (if not all) places, and is endemic to the human condition. Rather than focus on San Diego, which for all it’s shortcomings has some good points as well, direct your attentions to the wider picture; urbanization, media, greed, values etc and de-personalize or detach yourself from those thoughts, so they don’t drag you down with them. You are clearly sensitive to things that others may not be able to share, but don’t be discouraged, as your sense of isolation may be part of who you are, so seek it out.

February 23, 2009 at 10:14 AM #352594AnonymousGuestThank you, jpinpb, ctr70, zk (to a degree :)), UCGal, and qwerty007 for the very sane constructive criticism and/or support!
this was the original intent of my comment- to spark discussion. i was shocked by the response not because i’m any kind of a social misfit or an awkward person, but because there was such incredible hatred and nobody agreed with or disputed anything i said with regard to actual content. again, the tone was probably the reason and i accept responsibility for that, but i’m glad to see a change from some commenters since my last comment.
