My kids have to kill and skin and cook a rattlesnake. Change the brakes on the truck and grow and can some okra. It will be just like a 1920-1930’s depression and we don’t have to leave it to the whims of central bankers as to whether they are spoiled or not.

June 19, 2014 at 8:34 AM #775390CoronitaParticipant
Over-achieving, smart kids, I can’t relate. My 14 year old step-daughter failed 9th grade freshman geometry. I would prefer she take the course over during the summer, am in process of tracking down the high school to figure out an approved course, likely on-line.
We are having a tough time trying to explain to our over indulged, spoiled little white girl that soccer, field hockey, and lacrosse are GONE until she proves she can keep her grades up. Plus her mom has filled her head with visions of UC Davis and Berkeley, now I the bad step mom am trying to explain that in a overachieving world even a B knocks you out of the running, let alone a D!
Anyone have kids that took geometry for high school over the summer, on-line or other?
When I was in high school, I often took the classes in the local community college if that helps….
The nice thing about america is, there’s plenty of good schools so one or two or three schools in’t really going to make or break a kid…me thinks (I hope)….

My kid said she was willing to work on the miata if I could find a pink set of wrenches……
That said, I’m not trying to push too hard. Just trying to get the kid to be more careful….There’s diminishing returns that to the point the kid gets frustrated and just doesn’t care….
I got my kid signed up for some drama lessons..In case my kid ever wants to be a politician…..:(

Interesting. My dad made sure all three of us kids had the following skills:
– Able to cook well enough to feed oneself without going to a restaurant.
– Able to sew well enough to mend clothes. (My brother turned his sewing skills into money in college – making climbing gear and backpacks and selling to friends.)
– Able to change oil and filter on a car, gap a sparkplug, do basic car maintenance. He even made me do a valve job on my old honda.
– Able to do yard maintenance.
– Able to do laundry without turning everything pink or size zero.I have the same goals for my kids.

I was really into theater in hs. Parents thought it was a waste of time. Turned out to be most valuable experience I had then.
June 19, 2014 at 12:38 PM #775431treehuggerParticipantI saw pink tools at Sears.
BYU Independent Study just approved by High School…..I think Palomar or Mira Costa is in her future after high school.

June 19, 2014 at 3:14 PM #775454flyerParticipantI think my parents and my wife’s parents may have been “Tiger Parents” before there were “Tiger Parents.” For the most part, we carried it on with our kids, and it has paid off. This was our lineup:
-Max educational goals–Decide what you want to “Be” BEFORE the grandparents pay for
college–required.
-Max career goals–See above.
-Max sports goals (some team, but mostly competitive golf and tennis)
-Max creative goals–play at least 2 instruments, and/or art, dance, etc.
-Max travel.
-And, as UCGal mentioned, “everyday stuff.” Everyone was pretty much prepared to take care of themselves, their homes, their cars, etc., by the time we/they were out on our own.June 19, 2014 at 6:30 PM #775465nlaParticipant
Yeah, I believe UCs (the “tier 1/2” ones) are pretty hard to get in now…
I’ve read especially UC Berkeley and UCLA being the toughest…(probably depending on if you want to live in nor cal or so cal…)
Then, I think UC Davis and UC San Diego are just a step below those 2.
For the people with HS kids, maybe they can share if they applied/were able to get in. It seems much harder now though from all I’ve read.
I have a daughter who just graduated from HS. She was accepted to all UCs that she applied to including UCLA and Berkeley. In fact she was admitted as a Regent scholar at UCLA but she’s heading to an Ivy League school. It’s getting harder now to get in to UCLA and UC Berkeley but for the most part, acceptance to a UC is pretty much predictable compared to the elite private schools. If you have perfect to near perfect GPA and a decent SAT/ACT plus respectable EC’s/awards, you’re pretty much a shoo-in to UCLA/Berkeley. You can’t really say that to elite private schools since they have other qualifications and categories to fill (Under represented minorities, Athletes, legacies, donors, international, etc.).
June 21, 2014 at 8:18 AM #775538NotCrankyParticipantI was joking with the previous list..though there is some related type activities going on always…we haven’t skinned and eaten a rattlesnake yet because we kill then relocate them.
What we have done so far is really more like what scaredy would do.
We bought four tennis rackets from the Goodwill and also found this cool free Goodwill online tutorial center.

Thanks for sharing…I think going to an Ivy is a better bet myself. UCs have less budget, harder to get classes, more crowded, isn’t as “cheap” anymore with financial grants…
Not sure how Ivy schools are, but felt UCs had a lot of weeding and 1/3 of the classes, someone had to fail (engineering) and retake the class or drop out of the major.
For your daughter, with grants/forgivable aid, was the cost just as good or close to the UCs as well? I keep reading it’s not as cheap anymore.
