[quote=SD Realtor]Did the dems really really really think the republicans were going to not be total assholes about this? Sorry if I am taking a devils advocate point of view that perhaps sometime prior to the November elections one of Obamas cabinet guys could have or now SHOULD have whispered in his ear and said, ya know we could be really f’d next year if we lose the house….

True that the Democrats are not as good at playing brinkmanship.
You’re saying that the Democrats should have planned in advance. You’re correct.
But if you agree that paying existing bills is required of Congress, then how would you characterize the Republican actions?
Is it honest to make paying existing bills to vendor and creditors contingent upon coming up to an agreement on future spending?
If anything, it’s not fair to vendors and creditors and does not provide them with certainty.

August 8, 2011 at 9:22 PM #716445SD RealtorParticipantBrian I characterize the repubs actions as totally idiotic. You know my stand on taxes. I have posted that I see no way out but to raise them and am willing to pay them (grudgingly) but not with more spending.
It was stupid for them to have the insistence about taxes and stupid for Obama to insist on a deal past the elections.
As for the part about an agreement on future spending, I am not really sure that that was a bad idea. It is folly to think that some calamity will never happen and that may require emergency spending, however absent of some huge unforseen event, I don’t think that is an entirely unreasonable request.
Also to me at least, payment to creditors is in the event of a default is not the governments choice. The treasury makes that decision and would pay the creditors.

August 8, 2011 at 9:33 PM #716450AnonymousGuestThe fact that you claimed that there was an 18 month supermajority just goes to show that you swallow Fox News’ lies like they are gospel. You are not well versed enough in politics or economics to have an insightful discussion.
Repubs, like you, were never interested in tackling our debt problem, it was all a charade to gut medicare and SS.
Taxes have to be increased but you fools wont have it. All of the Bush tax cuts should have been allowed to expire, but your boys held the unemployed hostage.
Look at Bruce Bartlet’s (a conservative) break down of were the current deficit is coming from. It’s predominantly from the Bush tax cuts, 2 stupid unfunded wars, and Medicare part D.
Try educating yourself so you don’t have to depend on more of your lies and misinformation.
I didn’t even vote for Obama and wish he would be challenged in next years primary, I’m just sick of ignorant people like yourself who are incapable of having an honest discussion.
Stop posting stupid lies and misinformation.
