Does anybody know if permanent resident aliens are eligible for the rebate? They pay taxes, so I’m assuming yes?

I just read the fine print of the stimulus package…the reason they’re waiting till May is that they are basing refund on 2007 AGI…That cuts us out…at least for the full refund. Hubby changed jobs in Jan. so we sold our stock options from old company at the end of 2007…pushes us over the full refund limit..It looks like we’ll get some percentage. Can’t tell if I’m glad we make enough to not qualify or irked that we’re right on the cusp for our “advance on a credit you’ll receive on your 2008 return” (per the CNN site). This middle class thing blows. We don’t make so much that 1200.00 (1500.00 w/ our kid) is peanuts to us but we do make enough that if we don’t get any rebate we’ll still be o.k. Granted that’s mostly because we live conservativly and sock away as much as we can while still maintaining our Netflix account (this writers strike has opened our eyes to a whole new world of entertainment – The BBC has made some great shows!)
To Diego Mamani – I’m not sure how the CC fee thing works. We’ve not owed Federal taxes ever now that I think about it. I just assumed you could pay via CC. Are there fees involved? If the fees are over 1.00 you’re right, it wouldn’t be beneficial. I’d earn say 1000 points on a 1000.00 tax bill which is 1/10 of a 10.00 gift card. Guess I’ll pay by check. That will only cost me .41 and an envelope (my checks come free from B of A cuz I’m an
ooo-la-la Premier member – ain’t I special :>) ) Thanks for the heads up on this…we’re doing our taxes this weekend to see how bad the damage is!Doublewide

BTW: if this is the first time you owe the IRS money, then you and your hubby are pretty generous giving the government an interest free loan in the previous years. If you were off by alot by getting huge refunds, you should consider upping your tax exemptions on your W2's so that less is withheld. Just make sure you either end up paying more taxes from the previous year, or you keep within 90% of the total taxes you owe by Jan (send in estimated tax payments in december). And be sure you change your exemptions if your financial situation changes from year to year.
