It looks like Hawaii is the place where solar makes the most sense. Electric rates are sky high over there.

Interesting that residential rates are higher than commercial and industrial.

March 1, 2011 at 11:45 AM #672294treehuggerParticipantI received a marketing call yesterday from a company called Acro Energy (the guy on the phone said he was located in Temecula). They were saying that if my SDGE bill was over $150/month I qualified for subsidized solar. Lots of Rebates and I would pay nothing upfront. I found the people I spoke with annoying and rather ignorant (they sounded stupid and uneducated, which I suppose makes me a snob, but is one of my peeves), I am definitely interested in solar, but they were unable to provide any concrete details. I thought it would involve a visit to my home to evaluate the potential benefit of solar, roof capability all that….I offered to set up an appointment to meet them, they said it was not necessary to see my house. They never even asked about square footage. I took their number and said I would call them back at my convienance.
Has anybody heard of these folks or have any thoughts/suggestions?

I bet if they come out and give you a bid they will not want to leave it with you. I would shop around and get multiple bids and pit them against each other. All panels are not created equal either. Some are made in Japan and some are made in China. Get installers that have been in the business awhile and ask for referrals where you can go talk to the homeowner about the system. SDG&E’s website may have some rebate information. There is currently a recall of Xantrex Grid Tie Inverters: http://www.sunfirstsolar.com/blog/inverter-recall/ So read up and see what other consumers think of the various companies. One more issue, silver is used in panels (I do not know how much), but like other precious metals, today it went up.
