AN- even if your kids are going to private school you can have them GATE tested in the 2nd grade by SDUSD if you live w/in SDUSD. Seminar doesn’t happen till 3rd grade. So kids who test seminar (99.9 or higher on the raven) in 2nd can start in 3rd. So that is the earliest you could send your kids into the seminar program. You do not have to send them to your home cluster seminar program… it’s common to look at several schools then work with the GATE person at that school to get the choice forms in.
Also… if your child is close… like a 99.8… you should still pursue seminar if your interested… they don’t advertise this but if there are extra seats they look at high tested gate kids. But you have to ask. They won’t come looking for you.
fwiw, I know one of the seminar teachers at Erickson. They have a pretty solid program.

June 14, 2011 at 7:34 PM #703449RhettParticipant
But if not all Seminar class are the same and not all are different than regular classes, then I won’t even take the risk and just keep them in the same private school through 5th Grade.
What type of private school they attend, AN (just curious)?

June 14, 2011 at 9:35 PM #703484EchooooParticipantalright, seems this old thread is alive again. I am frustrated with GATE in Poway due to the fact that my son was tested GATE (99.7 something), but he was not performing as he supposed to. As a fact, he has trouble understanding some instructions when doing math or reading comprehension. When I asked his teacher, she simply commented that “GATE students’ brain functions differently.” It seems that his angle of thinking is different. As a result, he is frustrated too. I really wish Poway has a program catering to GATE students. But again, I suppose every gifted students has his/her own area of giftness…
