We can generate plenty of electricity with Nuclear Fission. The fuel rods can be reprocessed and used again. Most American vehicles don’t travel more than 50 miles a day. Wouldn’t it be better for the Poor folks if there is a working Electric car that can drive 100 miles per charge? Very reachable over the next 3-5 years. We would probably already have it if gas was $5 a gallon 5 years ago.
Drilling for more oil does little good if there are no refineries. US has not built any refineries for something like 30 years due to NIMBY. I don’t particular care we drill or not, and I don’t care about the Caribous up in ANWR. But, I do believe that it really is not in humanity’s best interest for a tiny number of people on this planet to consume 29% of the oil on a continual basis.
The Poor and Middle class in China and India will also want to consume gas. Guess what, they will drive the price up no matter how much we drill.
We’ve put all our eggs in one basket. Let’s start diversifying a bit. Leave the gas and the diesel for airplanes and semi trucks. The rest of us can use alternatives.

June 21, 2008 at 1:44 PM #226238jficquetteParticipantPoor people can’t afford new electric cars. Besides, where do you think the energy to charge the car comes from?? The wall? LOL.
It has to be generated and that takes energy. As a matter of fact, more energy is wasted in distribution from the power plant to the end user to use in electric cars then would be used in transporting gasoline.
Electric cars are a joke. Also thank congress for not having the refineries we need.
Build as many refineries as we need. Start now. By the time they are finished the new found oil it will be ready to process.

Go get a minimium wage job and see how many gallons of gas at $10 each you can buy.
Maybe they should just take a limousine, sort of like “Let them eat Cake”.
And how have Republicans helped poor people? By letting 90% of this country’s wealth get concentrated into the greedy hands of 1% of the population? By busting up unions? By refusing to raise the minimum wage?
Please don’t tell me your a Republican because you believe that party has policies that are better for poor people.
