ParticipantSince I’m married, I’d lose about $5,000 worth of my federal standard deduction.
Most people in the 9.3% State and 28% federal bracket are deducting enough in state income taxes to equate to standard deduction.

ParticipantIt’s not important what cancels what. It’s important to enter correct numbers into the rent vs buy calculator, or else you don’t get correct answers.

GuestI’m married and my state taxes were $4,000 last year, but we’re in the 25% tax bracket in federal taxes. When I did may taxes itemized versus standard, the itemized fell about $5,000 short of the standard deduction. This will also become more and more important as houses become affordable for people who aren’t making 120K+
