While the street mailbox may be more convenient, there is a lot to be said for living in a community where all mail goes to the post office.
Having spent a fair bit of time this past year in Avalon, over on Catalina, there are some advantages that we’ve lost. Having all the mail go to the post office is actually a community builder – you will have more contact with your neighbors and build better relationships. Going to the post office becomes a social activity and way to create a community bond that is so lacking in our modern lives.
If you want to live behind iron gates with limited contact with the neighbors/outside world then curbside delivery is great. If you would like a feeling of actual community – having all mail route to the post office is pretty cool.
I can count the number of post office socializing events I have experienced on one hand. Avalon is different because people there tend to have more time on their hands. At my post office, it is pretty much grab and run. You are more likely to be run over than spoken to.
