you make a great point about knowing your local lawmakers and getting down and dirty with the specific details of politics, but then lump everyone together along with all the issues and blend them up into a bloody mess of issues and viewpoints. what gives?

January 5, 2008 at 12:56 PM #130234NotCrankyParticipant“who are your LOCAL lawmakers? Do you know? Many savvy, intelligent people cant answer that simple question. And those very people should be hearing from consituents to effect change.”
PW
What questions and concerns should we be taking to our local government . What should be the goals, in your opinion, of getting involved? Should we organize or get involved on their terms?

January 5, 2008 at 1:03 PM #130168PussyWillowParticipantI was simply trying to make the point that IN MY OPINION it seems like the majority of people in this country is “comfortably numb.” Not everyone. Just a lot of people. I was trying to also make the point – perhaps unsuccessfully – that in today’s world we are all burdened with so many distractions sprinkled liberally with fear(s), that many of us don’t have the time or energy to find out what the real story is. We rely on the media to tell us in easy to digest sound bites. And while people are on anti-depressants, glued to their phones or checking our email, the oily gears of government grind away and slowly erode rights. Wire tapping programs. Patriot Act, etc. Some will say, “but those things dont apply to me!” Well, no, maybe not now. But who’s to say it wont. Especially once there is PRECEDENCE.
I know people who waste energy worrying about whether they are “red” or “blue”, hating the right or hating the left, convinced that the most godly man has to be president, or the person that has the best smile, or most earnest attitude. If you are really concerned about leaving a better world for your kids and grandkids GET INVOLVED NOW. It doesnt matter which side you’re on. Just find out what the hell is really going on and take some action.
I’ll step down from my soapbox now.
