ParticipantDepending on your status and age you can obtain up to a $125,000 homestead exemption just by filing a Homestead Declaration and paying the filing fee. I don’t believe putting the property into a personal trust would help you in this regard because it’s still you and the trustee(s) are individuals who could be judgment debtors.

ParticipantThanks for the insight. I am 30 and just trying to do all of my homework on this. I was gonna consult a RE attorney but figured I’d consult the pigs first. Thanks again

GuestAn experienced collections attorney would probably give you the best advice, and that isn’t me. In any event, not sure if there’s anything you can do to effectively “hide” your assets from legitimate collections. But a proper answer depends on so many variables, and would be impossible to effectively address on this blog.
Are you in a line of work where this has you worried? At the very least, get plenty of insurance.
