CD: my point was twofold – If we as Americans stuck our head in the sand every time we were faced with a difficult situation we would be nowhere. Now I know that would be great for some people who don’t like the USA but I believe we can and will get through this situation and be wiser for it. Now I know the Enviro-nuts will be all over me for saying that because they would rather people suffer and save a delta smelt or fairy shrimp. The oil leak will be plugged (hopefully soon) and we will clean up the mess that BP made.
My second point was why our gov’t has not aided in this clean up? Is it trying to make oil drilling look badly? They don’t need help. The gov’t has ships, and people who could aid in the leak and it seems that they are keeping their distance. Similar to the charges that were leveled against Bushy after Katrina. Deep sea oil drilling is not new and goes on all over the world. The North Sea above Scotland and off Norway are full of wells, are you telling me no one has had this problem before? If not then we will be learning a lot from this disaster. Why isn’t the Gov’t doing everything in its power to help contain the spill? Instead we get finger pointing and blame. BP will pay but will we as tax payer’s end up footing a bill? My guess is YES both in environmental cleanup and people losing their jobs in the gulf but also with higher gas prices because “no more drilling” will be the mantra from another party.

May 26, 2010 at 9:04 AM #554267ArrayaParticipantIt’s a conspiracy. BP is trying to make themselves look bad.

A fleet of boats under BP’s control sat idle this weekend as Jefferson Parish officials begged for the company’s help when a thick brown slick of oil threatened to enter two passes leading into Barataria Bay.
BP officials in Grand Isle told Chris Roberts, a Jefferson Parish councilman, and other parish and city officials they did not have the authority to order the boats into action.
“They said they were waiting for some direction from their people in Houma,” Roberts said. “But they never got it.”
The fleet of nearly 50 boats is part of BP’s Vessels of Opportunity program — created to help with the company’s massive oil leak about 50 miles offshore — and there is skimming and boom equipment on board, Roberts said.
But on Friday and Saturday the boats were docked in Grand Isle, Roberts said.

May 26, 2010 at 11:19 AM #554302UCGalParticipantI heard an interesting observation yesterday…
When the coal mine collapsed, killing those miners, there was outrage against the company for short cuts on safety, it was called murder… President Obama attended the funeral.
When the platform blew up – lives were lost. Again there are signs of shortcuts on safety… it might have been preventable. But no one is calling it murder, the President didn’t reach out to the families, etc.
I voted for Obama, but I see some hypocrisy here.
