My cousin and his wife retired to Laguna woods. They love it there because of all the activities.
He has a Tesla 3. People who live in the community pay $120/yr if they have a golf cart. EV owners pay $240 year for charging. People who don’t have stickers are fined $400 if they plug in. Granted, charging is only 110V level 1, so the car is always charging when parked. No garages at Laguna woods — only covered stalls.
I would say he drives about 15,000 miles a year because they are active with trips to LA and San Diego and daily activities. So $240 per year in “fuel” costs. Too much of a bargain not to take advantage. The wife does not drive anymore but she always wanted to be driven in an upscale car. Now they have it, not that Tesla 3 is that upscale. They always had “average” cars before.
If you have more than 1 car per household, you can make it work and you can save money. Most people are not reasonable. They want an SUV to maybe escape fires, maybe go off-road, maybe take trips, none of which they do. I know people who rent cars when taking trips because they are afraid to put miles on their cars. It’s all emotions, it has nothing to do with practical use which an electric car does fine. That’s why manufacturers should make electric cars distinctive, in style and color, so owners get social credit points for driving them to trader Joe’s.

LOLAugust 29, 2019 at 3:40 PM #813400FlyerInHiGuestI feel like I’m being forced to breathe engine exhaust and deal when engine noise and pay for freeways i don’t need.
There is a reason people whose houses back up to freeways or busy thoroughfares have health problems such as asthma.

That is downright lame, as if Biden could not come up with other ways to fight the smear job.September 30, 2019 at 6:41 AM #813692HobieParticipantAnother example of his character ( corruption?). Just like his strong arming Ukraine to fire prosecutor
Interesting that he put it writing… maybe there is a dem faction out to sink him and replace with Hillary 3.0??
October 15, 2019 at 12:33 PM #813765FlyerInHiGuestWow, Bernie Sanders used to be a deadbeat renter. I don’t know that I can support people who don’t pay rent. Someone in his 30s who doesn’t pay rent is bad.
October 15, 2019 at 3:48 PM #813767FlyerInHiGuestElizabeth Warren is quite the woman. She’s come a long way from a mom at 20 to what she is today. Gotta admire that.
I like her speeches and body language— raised arms and rubbing hands.October 16, 2019 at 9:03 AM #813772evolusdParticipantI hated how Warren strategically avoided the question about raising taxes on the middle class to pay for Medicare for all. That’s what I hate about politicians. She scares me. Thought Mayor Pete did well and I’m a big fan of Yang – those two have the best chance at converting Trumpers and getting independent votes.
October 16, 2019 at 9:32 AM #813774spdrunParticipantIf your taxes go up by $1000 per month but you and/or your employer save $1500/mo on insurance costs (family insurance is expensive in the US), who wins? The trick would be to mandate that employer scum pass what they save on insurance through to employees in the form of higher pay.

That is downright lame, as if Biden could not come up with other ways to fight the smear job.[/quote]It was a weak move, but are there other ways?
These days, smear jobs are more effective than ever. Much of Trump’s success can be attributed to his effective use of smear jobs. The “birther” claims were absurd and idiotic but literally millions believe them. Most of Trump’s approach to fighting his own misdeeds is to basically repeat “I know you are but what am I” over and over through right wing media.
There’s a saying: Teaching truth requires evidence but teaching falsehoods only requires confusion. Social media and 24 hour news have amplified this effect. Repeat a lie often enough and it becomes truth to many.
I think Biden has done everything that reasonably can be done to fight the smear job. Unfortunately it probably won’t be enough.

Why is it a smear job? He should’ve embraced it as a positive.
sure my sons been making money off the system. Legally. That’s called smart. But you need to elect me because only I know the way to reform the system.

Clever idea but i think that generally only works with taxes.
Funny thing is Trump used that angle and it worked with his base. (He didn’t even bother to include the part about reforming the system!)
Most of the “outrage” I see about Biden’s son is based on the claim that he was on the board of a company in an industry where he had no experience.
I think many Americans don’t understand that for someone with and Ivy League law degree and a relation to someone in a powerful position, is a pretty common to get a cushy board position. There are many examples of generic smart connected people sitting on boards in industries where they have no specific background. I have a friend with a Harvard Law degree that immediately after school got a C-level position in a financial industry where he had zero experience. The big degrees carry a lot of weight in these circles. As for the family connections, one doesn’t even need daddy to get you the job, they will come to you because of your name.
Biden’s situation isn’t unusual at all. At worst it’s very mild and quite ordinary nepotism.

You are dead on about how effective smear jobs are- people think Biden Sr. strong armed the removal of a prosecutor in Ukraine all by himself.

Trump provided no specifics and be won. People say they want a plan but they don’t understand complex plans anyway.
Just follow Trump example and and promise what you will. If people like what you promise, they will vote do you. No plan needed.
