Personally, I like EQ3. It’s a bit more expensive and of better quality than IKEA, but definitely not “expensive.” And a bit more consciously retro/mod than West Elm.http://eq3.com/cat-eq3/index.html%5B/quote%5D
http://www.cb2.com is similar also.
I like mid-century modern. Good for downtown apartments and small spaces.
My favorite of the big stores would be
But they’re out to OP’s price range and the styling is much different also.

ParticipantWhat do you guys think of Ethan Allen? It is very expensive but I think the quality is really good.

GuestI have not bought furniture there but they have amazing deals on furniture that Costco sells, at two stores called “GTM” in Lemon Grove and Santee. (They are mainly an odd-lot store, but carry a bunch of products that Costco sells, including clothes and household stuff, for less than Costco actually sells it for.)
They do not have a great selection, usually one of a kind and just a few pieces, more reliably in the
Lemon Grove store — but what I have seen there has been pretty attractive, ranging from leather chairs and couches to upholstered “La-Z-Boy” type stuff. I am sure it must be made in China, etc., because the prices are generally $300 for a chair and $400-700 for a sofa, but it looks comparable to what you would find in Macy’s, and its quality is likely better than what you find at Jerome’s.
If you have time to wait until something you like shows up there, it seems like a good option.November 5, 2009 at 8:33 PM #478404Anonymous
