Well, you can call this abuse if you want, and this probably isn’t widespread. But a some folks that were c-level+ folks at companies a few weeks (month or more) back volunteered to be let go with very interesting arrangements.
*Negotiated 6-8 months of severance..
*Paid as a one-time lump sum bonus, minus 2-3 weeks.
*The 2-3 weeks was so they would be classified as laidoff instead of quiting (though, it did save others from getting axed).
*Said folks are collecting unemployment, and they were pretty firm about not wanting to return to work anytime soon.…So, it’s kinda ironic. For the next 6-8 months, these folks’ take home pay is slightly more than when they worked.
..And to think that in the economic times, moving to a different firm for a better opportunity and continuing a side biz would have been the smart thing for me to do….lol… (ok… I can’t complain, since I work a lot with Asian firms which somehow manages to hire some of good looking women enginerds.)

March 2, 2010 at 9:47 PM #520010CoronitaParticipant
From what I understand, you need to certify that you’re looking for job in order to get your unemployment check.
Now if you lie, then that’s another story.
Unemployment is insurance and not welfare. It’s funded by premiums (taxes) paid by employers. But of course the extensions are government bailouts.
Well, it’s a grey area. Because technically, you can look and never “find” what you are looking for because it’s not a “comparable position”. For instance, a high level SW architect probably can say he/she couldn’t find a comparable position despite how he/she could probably work (underemployed) at 1-2 levels below. So often times, some of the folks end up passing. For some of these folks, who aren’t exactly crunched for cash, they rather not dilute their perceived experience by moving down (for now). And in some twisted way, it sort of makes sense, unless you absolutely are living paycheck to paycheck.
I think reality is that we haven’t gone down to *that* level for unemployment (yet). And if it gets to that level, I’m sure there’s always the option of applying for a green card in india, china, korea, or japan…oh wait…

March 2, 2010 at 10:03 PM #520025FormerOwnerParticipantIt’s funny. I can’t imagine not working – even if I didn’t need the money. If I didn’t need to work, I think I’d spend my time doing volunteer work or trying to do something for the greater good. Of course, I’d have a lot of time for fun but I’m doing that while working full-time anyway.
Somehow, it seems like a lot of people in our country no longer feel this way and would rather be “taken care of”. That is sad for everyone. It seems like a lot of people have given up on themselves, in a way. I think abuse of programs like Social Security Disability, Section 8, and Welfare are a lot more common than Unemployment abuse – that’s just my perception from people I know about. I know people that are living off the dole and I don’t think they’re doing themselves a favor at all. They now feel not only entitled but dependent on the system. Sad.
