the USA is one of the few countries where YOU CAN BECOME wealthy through hard work, not by your birth rite or birth class.
I agree with this 100%, but it only works if every individual starts the game on an even playing field. We all know this is not so. In other words, some people have to work harder than others. You can’t tell me that a poor black child in inner city Chicago has the same chances of becoming successful as a silver-spoon fed white child from La Jolla. It just ain’t so.
This nation was founded upon the principle that HARD WORK can make you successful. It was also founded upon principles designed to keep the aristocracy at bay. The aristocracy is exactly what the founding fathers were fleeing from. The rich want to become the aristocracy, but they fail to realize that this nation was designed to prevent that.
The same people espousing “hard work” are the same people espousing the repeal of affirmative action and the estate tax. Unfortunately, these people don’t see the disconnect between their positions.

June 13, 2008 at 9:58 AM #222492AecetiaParticipantMichelle Obama succeeded and she is from a poor, Chicago family. Thanks to her intelligence and her parents hard work, she is successful. There are no even playing fields. We all do not get the same breaks or brains or ability. What makes us succeed is character, not failed government social egineering programs.
“Born on January 17, 1964, Michelle Robinson was raised in a one-bedroom apartment on Chicago’s South Shore. Of note is that she shared a ‘bedroom’ with her brother, but it wasn’t much of a bedroom. It was actually the living room with a divider down the middle. Michelle’s father died in 1990 two years before she married Barack, but her mother is still alive and living in the same one-bedroom apartment, protected by a burglar-proof wrought-iron door and secured windows.”

June 13, 2008 at 11:02 AM #222536MANmomParticipantafx114, I feel sorry for you. What a poor outlook on life. Ever heard of Colin Powell? Read that book, that’s just one example. I could go on, but something tells me you will never be motivated to be great. It is people like you who convince the masses that they will never have anything unless the Government gives it to them. How pitiful.
