OT: Sedation for kids during dental visit

We were told, when we asked this question of the dentist, that the issue is infection. As the cavity gets worse, it can get infected, and have implications with the heart.

(Trust me – we asked a LOT of questions before agreeing to extracting 2 baby molars.)

UCGal, I took him to a pediatric dentist b/c I figured the dental office would be more appealing to children.

I just talked to the dentist. Novacaine will be used to numb his mouth. The plan is to have the dentist work on one quadrant of the mouth during each visit.

I spent my early years in Detroit, in which the water supply is fluoridated. I’m now 32 and not a single cavity. I don’t do anything special beside brushing and an occasional flossing (every couple of months). Both of my parents grew up in the West Indies and have horrible teeth.

I don’t have any health issues that I’m aware of.

I can’t imagine taking my 3 year old to a dentist without sedation. No way he’s going to sit still and calm while some stranger is trying to drill holes in his mouth.

The choice of demerol is strange. It’s a painkiller, not a sedative. Nitrous oxide or valium would make more sense.
