June 11, 2008 at 1:23 PM #221341meadandaleParticipantthe Vespa’s are a little more pricey than the Kycos or Buddy scooters
Yeah, like twice as expensive.
The Vespa’s run $5k-6kish and the Kycos are about $3k (at least the ones I’m interested in).
I think with Vespa you are paying the name premium more than anything. They are like the Prada of scooters.

June 11, 2008 at 4:11 PM #221495AnonymousGuestI saw a similar piece about Harley sales being up due to gas prices. Not sure how it makes sense to buy a 20K bike to ‘save money’ on gas.
Scooters are certainly more economical than motorcycles, but far less practical for commuting (I’ve owned both). Just not a realistic alternative to a car in America at this time, unless you are a student or live very close to work. And then there’s that safety factor. No sane person takes a scooter on the freeway, even the larger displacement models that are technically highway ‘legal’
These news items are more ‘fluff’ than substance. If there is a ‘bump’ in scooter sales, I’ll wager it’s from buyers at the margin using gas prices as an excuse to make their novelty purchase. Wait a year and there will plenty of used scooters for sale cheap.
