At “$82k/year” you are definitely underpaid, given the degree and cred’s you claim…but keep in mind that San Diego is a soft market for most types of engineers.
A reference point is I bumped my salary by over 20% instantly just by opening up to offers from the Bay Area, and accepting one, taking me away from San Diego.
The Bay Area is pretty hot right now. It has turned around 180 in the last six months. Local software tech companies are fighting over talent, particularly for software engineers. Big offers from Facebook are pulling talent out of Google. Then Google responds by giving every employee a 10% raise. There are countless more examples.
Now with turnaround it went from DEAD, to now I’m getting a call per week from different headhunters asking me to interview for nice big blue chip Bay Area companies. I interviewed with Google last month, for example.
There are certain types of software engineers, that are getting offers of 150K to 175K for base salary up here in Bay Area, for only 5+ years experience. It was in the newspaper recently.

Also, you might be correct that only a small percentage of folks are in that category…But just be one of those small percentage of folks who are and go from there….:)stocks….
I don’t care if they pay X in SF versus a few percentage points lower in SD…On a W-2 income, it gets taxed up the ying yang anyway.
I’ve been learning this as a harsh reality…. W-2 income suck. No matter what anyway you look at it….
Why work so hard to just get taxed ridiculously on lavishly entitlement programs you won’t ever see the light of day or on a military that wages war on anything?????
My buddy just moved to maryland. And they have a big retention problem there… Managers were told “don’t push the employees too hard, and ask them to work more than 8 hrs…If you do, they’ll quit”…..
compare this to co’s in CA….I can say they aren’t being paid much less, and have a considerable better quality of life….going the w-2 route.
Also, pass on google…. No way google stock is going to double from this point on. You’re better off joining a startup and take a gamble of getting bought out..

“Mobile App Talent Pool is Dry”
It’s the .com all over again…..
I hate to say this but…I did so call this 2 years ago….
I predict another 4-5 years of high demand why we embark on a platform war between apple, google, and to a lesser degree microsoft….Afterwards, consolidation and a glut of mobile app developers (similar to .dotcom HTML script kiddies that tried to pass themselves as “software engineers”…), of which the market will probably look ugly for workers….by then I will be retired…
stockstrader, why work for google when you can work for a startup? It’s not like you’ll be seeing $600/share anytime soon, especially after today’s earnings…
SmellsFishy… There is no such thing as loyalty…. You think a company is going to magically say “hey, we’re paying you below market…We’ll give you a big 25-30%+ raise… “..Or that they are going to train you to do android yourself? No way, hell no…They don’t give a rats about you……Polish your resume and get cracking….Best time to move is when you are still employed….
Dice and hotjobs suck…
Indeed is ok… Enter “android” and “san diego”….
Or here’s a quick link…http://www.indeed.com/jobs?q=android&l=san+diego
Or better, enter “android” and “california”…
You you be able to find something…within or of those 20+ pages worth of leads…Either that your you’re just unbelievably picky (nothing wrong with that)….
Or get a good recruiter and get on linkedin…
Outsourcing?…. Pfffff!!!! Whatever….
There’s absolutely no reason why you someone in your skillset should be treated like crap in this environment….There might be a recession, but it really doesn’t apply to you π
