Times have changed. Back in the days, parents thought it was an honor for a coach to take their son under his wing and give him extra personal attention.
Dennis Hastert became a born again Christian as a sophomore in high school.
Humm… born again Christian coach who likes to be with kids, travel with them, etc…
Times haven’t changed in terms of people who want to coach.
The thing that has changed is people have to be more careful before being falsely accused of doing something they really didn’t do. Afterall, we do live an an age where people tend to be more litigious and opportunist in the most heinous ways.
In some afterschool daycares, it takes two teachers/aides to walk a kid to the bathroom, one extra to serve as a witness…

June 10, 2015 at 12:20 AM #787176CA renterParticipantFWIW, this is an issue that teachers have to deal with on a daily basis. You are always keenly aware of appearances and how you have to avoid any kind of liability at all costs.
June 10, 2015 at 7:19 AM #787180svelteParticipantThis thread comes across as if all accusations made against adults supervising kids are false.
While it is wise that you all protect yourself from false claims (look at Dale Akiki for proof on why that is necessary), I would like to point out that it really does happen.
I can tell you from being on the receiving end from my jr high counselor. I was able to stop him before it became physical, but from what I learned later others weren’t as fortunate. From my experience with his actions behind closed doors, I can tell you their claims are true.
June 10, 2015 at 7:28 AM #787181scaredyclassicParticipantDid you see or hear about louis ck bit on child molestors on sat. Night live a few, weeks ago. Pretty good stuff
Affirms existence of molestors…Still, a very good idea to protect against accusations.

I don’t think anyone is disagreeing that real things do happen, and unfortunately it happens more often than we as parents would like…. But it’s just that if you do volunteer, you don’t want to be the one that puts in your time and effort volunteering in something and end up being one the rare cases that you are falsely accused of something you didn’t do.. Because if you ever end up in that situation, I’d say most parents would be biased and think something did happen, even if it didn’t. I admit I would be biased and give more weight to the accuser. Also, even if you didn’t do anything, and though accusations were proven false, you would be stuck with that reputation for a long long time…Which reminds me…Taking a GoPro camera wherever you go isn’t such a bad idea these days….

taking a gopro camera is definitely a bad idea to do if you actually are a child molestor however…

June 19, 2015 at 3:44 PM #787355scaredyclassicParticipantI dig the pope
June 19, 2015 at 4:08 PM #787356spdrunParticipantDoofrat: John Paul II was far from a figurehead. I’d agree about Benedict/Ratzinger.
June 19, 2015 at 6:14 PM #787358svelteParticipantYeah I’ve never ever liked a pope before, but I could see sitting down with this guy and enjoying myself.
June 19, 2015 at 10:39 PM #787359scaredyclassicParticipantI’m more open to converting

Yes, he’s exceptional.
Regarding the environment, I wonder when — more likely IF — anyone will ever get serious about planned obsolescence. This causes more environmental damage than most other environmental sins. Everything from raw materials acquisition/mining to factory pollution to transportation pollution to premature end-of-life dumping are all a result of planned obsolescence and the marketing machine that fools people into following trends and fashions. On top of the environmental damage, there is the financial damage done to the average consumer, too.
Yes, addressing this would severely damage the economy as we know it, but perhaps we ought to be looking at alternative ways of managing our resources and economy.
