The Chinese are a very industrious, talented, and go getter people. I have great respect for them and even greater respect for their huge potentials.
In my opinion, the Chinese authoritarian system is what still hold back a lot of things that Chinese could have and would have achieved. China has been growing with big discontents, ongoing repressions of the government to keep its emperor seat, the people’s struggles to get their freedom and rights to choose development that will serve them.
There is no doubt that the authoritarian system also provide a few advantages, but overall, with many of other big problems, a huge potential of a great people are still wasted.

December 6, 2010 at 4:00 AM #635827BubblesitterParticipantMy first trip to China was over 15 years ago and I’ve been going regularly about 3 to 4 times a year regularly every year since. I’ve been all over the country, but mainly in the eastern “rich” areas. Every trip I see something surprising.
The changes in China have been utterly astonishing.
But even with all the average 9%+ GDP annual growth rate every year for the last couple decades, there are still 600 million dirt poor peasants! Most of them now have dreams of cars and upward mobility.
The centrally planned govt, and ability to fastrack projects with agressive emminent domain allows many of these infrastructure projects to be completed in probably 1/4 the time or shorter than in the states. I bet that the entire Chinese nationwide high speed rail line will be nearly complete before the first real line is finished in the states.
Airports are another example. Most major and many minor cities in china have modern very nice airports that put US Airports to shame, especially LAX, JFK. A bunch of that stimulus should have upgraded airports. The Chinese airline system is impressive with good number of competitive airlines, with newer planes and better service than their US airline counterparts.

Unfortunately Americans who have not been anywhere but on cruises to Mexico or the Carribean believe that our infrastructure is so great.
The problem with Americans is that we don’t travel so don’t see what is going out outside our country.
Asians travel intensively and when they “make it” they save up money to visit America and Europe. Then they want to copy and improve upon what they have seen.
The flip side of poverty in China is there are now 300 million middle class consumers in China.
China has more cell phone subscribers than people in the USA. Everything in China will be the biggest. That mass of consumers give their companies a huge market to develop new products and services (something that America always benefited from).
Education is very important for Chinese families. They push their Children hard to excel. That’s not something that American families share.
