if you are not looking at trying to get LA stations, just put the antenna in the attic would be sufficient.
this one is pretty good too.
there’s plenty of stations on air and if you manage to hook your computer up to your TV, there will be plenty on Hulu.
absolutely no need for cable IMHO.

Instead, get a splitter and run your cable line to your tv and you should get basic cable even if you are not signed up for it.

You will need line of sight and you will probably have to rotate it to get different stations. If you live on a hill rabbit ears should do fine, if you live in El Cajon then hopefully you can see Mt.Miguel, if not you might be SOL.
