Allan, I actually find your view fairly balanced, especially in comparison to the wingnut social conservatives out there.
Sounds to me like you’re a national security hawk rather than one of those Evangelical Christians who have taken over the Republican party.
sdgrrl, I’m with you and I’m happy that America is the melting pot that it is.
Right now is the best time to be an American. The food is great, the fashion is cool, the people are interesting. There opportunities for those who seek it. The economy is going downhill but we are still the largest most prosperous market with plenty of choices.
When I’m in NYC and ride the subway, I always think that America is great because we welcome so many peoples and cultures from around the world.
I only wish that Americans were better received around the world.
I can’t express how proud I am that our country is such a melting pot and that even with our Great Recession our country is what others dream of.
Seriously, whenever I feel bummed paying my student loan, or my car goes kaput- I tell myself “Your life is somebody’s dream”. i know there is someone in Afghanistan, Mexico, Haiti, etc that wishes with all their heart they could even have the chance to go to college, have a car, have a job, marry who they want.
America and its progress have made all these things possible for me and I am so appreciative of that.

September 17, 2009 at 3:30 PM #458117ZeitgeistParticipantMarion was definitely one of a kind. She morphed a few times and came back, but the Professor was on to her and she ended up black listed for breaking the rules. I like how this blog is run because it is also a melting pot of personalities and information and whether you post or not, there is always something new to learn. I prefer the civility we have here. If you venture on to other blogs or even the comments section of signonsandiego, the political remarks always degenerate into extreme insults and name calling and we are better than that. Shannon, I appreciate your honesty and always wish you well. I am sure your mother did an outstanding job of raising you and I can tell you are proud of your heritage. Asians have helped make this a great country.

I firmly believe Obama was elected ONLY because of Bush. If Bush didn’t exist, USA wouldn’t have selected a man sharing Arican/Black/African-American heritage as the POTUS. Not for another 2 or 3 decades.
I believe the same.
For that I’m happy that Bush even existed.
I believe that Obama deserves to be president; and I’m glad that he didn’t pay his dues in the Senate and wait his turn.
We live in a changing world and paying dues the old fashioned way doesn’t have to be the only way to the top. Those who are the best deserve to rise the fastest.
Obama’s election in itself restored America as leading the way in terms of social progress.
The fear of Obama comes from white folks who fear for their place in society. People are unemployed and financially on edge so they fear the “furriners”.
I like Joe Klein. He is certainly on to something. There’s nothing wrong with some elitism and intellectuals thinking above the masses.

its-racism-but-its-complicated/And even though the teabaggers’ pinched , paranoid sensibilities are now being stoked by Boss Rush and the leaders of the Republican party, I take comfort in this: the racists and nativists have always been with us, and they have always lost. They will lose this time, too.
