Allan and Aecetia, if those who don’t want health care shouldn’t have to pay for it, what about those who don’t want to pay for war (or to feed the military industrial complex)? Is there a way for us to opt out?
How about the socialism that is the military?
Brian: I’m not sure how I’m being dragged into the healthcare debate, especially since I haven’t offered up an opinion, one way or the other on it.
As to not supporting the military-industrial complex, I would think you vote your conscience on that one. As a former soldier, I deeply distrust my government and the sprawling American corporate monoculture that controls it. However, the issue, like most issues, is more complex than that, especially when you get into the necessity of winning WWII and the Cold War. The size of the programs needed to achieve those ends wound up creating the very companies (including those in banking and finance that pushed the money) that are a problem now.
As to the military being socialist, I’ll profess I’m not entirely sure what you mean there. If you explain it further, I’d be happy to answer. The only truly socialist military I have any experience with is the French and they have those really neat hats, so I don’t think they’re all bad.

September 17, 2009 at 10:34 AM #457925briansd1GuestAllan by the military being socialist, I mean the lifetime healthcare, the GI bill, the pensions, all family support services, etc….
Shouldn’t we just pay a straight salary commensurate with experience and ability, and let the soldiers save money for their own self? Let the soldiers self-determine and manage their own finances and well being. If they can’t, well tough luck. That’s how the market place works. Isn’t that the conservative mantra?

You continue to make attributional errors when posting about people you disagree with. All I ask is that you state facts about their posts when you reply. I do not object to any of your personal opinions. I only object to your wa statements that you project on other people based on who you think they are because of your political leanings. Again, you made it the good old days, not Zeit. How do you know what Zeit thinks are the good old days? Maybe he/ she is a time traveler who thinks the middle ages were the good old days.
I also am going to add that I know Asians and half Asians and most of them do not whine about their treatment or bemoan how their relatives were treated (except the camps the Japanese were put in during WWII). The ones I know celebrate this country and consider themselves Americans first. The ones I know were in orphanages in Japan and were adopted by Americans. I also know others who were in foster care. None of them ever complain about how they were treated in this country. However, these half-Japansese, half Anglo were tormented while in the Japanese orphanage because they were half white. There is plenty of racism to go around and it is not all on the part of white America.
