Sounds like I agree with your friend’s political views. But I would also keep quiet about them. Have ruined or strained many relationships when the talk veers toward politics or religion.April 18, 2008 at 7:51 AM #189502EconProfParticipantBobS

Just last night I went to see Cindy Sheehan speak at Cal State San Marcos. I hadn’t bothered to mention this plan to my mother because she is also (like your friend) an ignorant person when it comes to the obvious truth in what is going on in this country. My mom gets most of her opinions from all the crap her ignorant friends forward her on the internet.
Anyway, I knew better than to even mention to her that I was going to Sheehan’s speech because I knew it would unleash a lot of stupid, false accusations about Sheehan – and sure enough, when I had to tell her where I was going because she was here when I left, she had to tell me how Cindy Sheehan was estranged from her son for a long time and how her son was a lifer and died for what he believe in – both BS. I just flatly told her that she was wrong and that she should check her sources and left for Cal State.
This is the first time in my life (and I came of age during the Vietnam war) that I have felt such venom towards people who still cling to the belief and confidence that G effen Bush knew/knows what he is doing and it’s for our national security.
I went to Cal State with a few tissues expecting to shed a few tears when listening to Sheehan’s talk and I was going to show support to a mother who lives with the reality that her son gave his life for our country bumpkin president. But it was nothing like that. her speech was fantastic and she is running for Nancy Pelosi’s seat in the house, because she feels that the democratic party is not acting on the voters’ mandate to defund the war and start getting us out of Iraq.
But her bigger issue with Pelosi is that Pelosi has tabled the impeachment of Bush and Cheney and when she gets elected (and if there ever was a place it could happen it would be San Francisco) she says she will bring it to the floor every day. http://www.cindyforcongress.org watch the video and you will get a sense of the sincerity of this woman who has taken her grief to a higher plain
So, in answer to your inquiry, I have lost respect for people who think that there is anything redeeming about this administration but I, like Cindy Sheehan, believe that the Democrats don’t have the guts to do what needs to be done – and that includes to two Democratic candidates.

April 18, 2008 at 8:05 AM #189499sd_bearParticipantWhen talking about politics with people I find it a lot easier to talk about policies rather than people. You can go on forever about “Mccain is a war hero patriot and Obama won’t wear a flag pin!”, but none of that really matters.
I find it much more satisfying to actually talk about things like a mortgage bailout, lower taxes, government intervention into personal lives, etc, because you can actually explain your stance on something with actual facts instead of just arguing about the MSM created facades of the politicians.
Also, when discussing policies you may actually enlighten someone who just looks at MSM facades to dig deeper into their candidate to see how much they actually agree with them.
