WOW! I think you are AMAZING FOR HELPING WITH this information and IF ONLY all professionals were as honest and helpful; where are you located I would make you my dentist in a heartbeat and tell everyone I know to as well. (especially after I tell you of my experience)
I had the exact same issue as the initiator of this string; with the exception of my dentist insisted he would need to do a $500 bone graft if he pulled my wisdom tooth; which is not covered by my insurance. I researched (which included your post here) and told him that I really didn’t “need” a bone graft and that I would be just with him simply pulling the tooth. He then tells me that they would need to do a panoramic X-ray in order to determine if the bone graft was needed; of course (as you probably know)is not covered by my insurance. I challenged that (thanks to your info) and told him that the tooth was not impacted, I don’t have any missing teeth on that side and asked what they were trying to see with this “panoramic x-ray”. At that point he became irate and essentially told not to tell him how to do his job and told me to leave.
My question, is a panoramic x-ray the only way to determine if a bone graft is needed or was it just an end around for him to make a few bucks?

June 20, 2013 at 2:08 PM #763097pucca94597ParticipantIs bone grafting after impacted wisdom teeth pull really necessary? I have a case where my wisdome tooth is completely impacted and is close to nerve — meaning, it’s impacted pretty deep. Oh and by the way, it’s completely upside down sitting on an angle pushing on the next tooth at a 45 degree angle.
3D imaging shows it’s close nerve but not enough to be very very complicated. One dentist recommended doing a bone grafting while other says it’s not necessary.
Why is there a difference in opinion? Bone grafting isn’t covered by insurance and it’s expensive… Any info would be appreciate it.
