brain remodeling is real. it is the basis of “practice makes perfect.” it is also responsible for delayed and milder dementia for folks with higher intelligence. when the brain is constantly working and challenged, new neural pathways are placed. therefore, someone with higher intelligence have the ability to use multiple neural pathways to solve complex problems. in a dementia situation, neurons are destroyed, but the more intelligent person manage to mask the dementia because he/she still have residual neurons that help him/her cope.
same with substance abuse. it is a feedback loop where the said substance lead to pleasure or sense of well being. this feedback loop after repeated stimulus become a feedback superhighway of sort. so an addict will always be more susceptible to the substance or substances for life.
this is why dietary control in children is so important. sugar is a powerful chemical that also lead to pleasure. so if a child has free access to as much sugar as he/she desires especially when his/her brain was in the formative stages, we got the building of a feedback superhighway where presence of sugar trigger a reaction much stronger than children who are controlled by their parents. the end result is he or she will always be more likely to go to sweet/carbs when seeking pleasure. this is why an obese child will always stay obese as an adult. this is brain remodeling at work.

This is very interesting to me.
But I would not discount the cultural element as well.
If you read the novels of the past, or watch old movies, you see that when people were depressed or sad, they would lose apetite and not eat.
Today, when people are depressed, they sit in front for the TV with a gallon of Haagen Dazs and a tray of brownies, or maybe a box of chicken wings and a 12 pack of beer. But people always drank their sorrows away.
Or maybe the adults of the past, as children, were not addicted to sugar like the adults of today.

Is the genetic defect for sickle cell and the breast cancer the same class as we are talking about as being claimed for addiction?[/quote]
O.K. CARenter, Sickle cell is “mendelian” . Spina bifida is sometimes not at all significant physically, even though it is present… somewhat like clefts can be minor cleft only lip only or cleft lip and palate. Cleft appears in something like 1 in 800.I’ll look more into the breast cancer thing now.I am suspicious that societal ills are responsible for it,possibly including overuse of mammograms and prescription drugs, birth control, hormones in food, ect. Not sure. And, of course, that doesn’t prove that the genetic problem wasn’t latent until all these environmental problems could exists and cause what seems to me to be an epidemic.
I am wondering if any genetic links for alcoholism might affect something like 1 in 800.
