I had one of my best lifelong friends die of this last year. It is still very sad for me.
We tried intervention over a decade before. He was forced to go to AA for awhile under threat of losing his job. None of it worked. He was too deeply into the pattern.
Even among his best friends who know everything we debate the cause – genetic, environmental, personality, some event…
Brian, I would just say enjoy your time with your friend. Go do things. Don’t try to fix it. I don’t think you can.
My friend was an asset to the planet – a popular teacher. He did not make it to 50.

this is why brian’s friend need to go see a psychiatrist first, to figure out just which camp he belongs before the right strategy can be implemented.
I think it’s good advice but he won’t see anybody where there’s a record that can resurface later.
Security screening can uncover medical records and affect his job.
I feel bad for those suffering from addiction who need help but can’t seek it. For example, a school bus driver might refuse help because that might jeopardize his job. But that makes it dangerous for the kids he’s driving.

I’m not sure what that means.
I am pretty sure you know that in this debate the burden of lasting proof is not on me?
To me, it’s a debate. Each participant provides his point of view and his evidence. But, in my eyes, you haven’t provided any serious evidence, let alone proven anything.
Yes Mr. Peele is a business man, but so are people who run research labs.
Maybe people who own labs are. But scientists who conduct studies are not. And neither are the scientists who review studies for publication in peer-reviewed medical journals.
