[quote=4plexowner]SDEngineer – have you ever considered the vast capabilities of the human mind that are as-yet undiscovered / unresearched?
The average human is using 10% of his brain – what’s up with the other 90%?
Uri Geller?
pre-cognition?
To dismiss the para-normal (only called that because we don’t understand it yet) out-of-hand is rather small-minded IMO

It is a myth that you only use 10% of your brain. You use the entire thing, just not all at the same time.

While we don’t know how the entire thing works (yet), if such paranormal activities were possible, I think we’d see FAR better evidence than currently exists for them (which consists almost entirely of testimonials by folks – like Dr. Mitchell – who have a history of being credulous, and which cannot be reproduced under any sort of controlled conditions).
Uri Geller is a magician, no different from David Copperfield, except that Uri keeps his persona on at all times, whereas offstage, Copperfield acknowledges he’s doing tricks. Uri has had his act blown several times by skeptics (including famously by Johnny Carson). However, the credulity of his audience allows him to continue to rake in the bucks.

July 24, 2008 at 4:34 PM #246316DWCAPParticipantMy biggest question is always “WHY?” Why would aliens travel many many light years to come to earth.
1) They are Indepence Day type aliens bent on takeing Earth’s resources.
Now we dont anything especially valueable here on earth your couldnt find other places just as easily. But I guess that holds true the other way around, why not Earths resources…. So ok. But why hide it? Why not just wipe us off like ants and move on. Secrecy and stealth take time, and what the hell for? You came all this way, peal your peach and get on with it.2) They are benevelent aliens like the Vulcans.
Now even the vulcans didnt get involved till we were warp capable. We still burn small chains of carbon molecules as our main form of transportation. Even by our standards the internal combustion engine is old, being first used just before the turn of the last century. (ie 1890’s)So they in their goodness hide themselves from us and keep useless, aging politicans who routinly abuse their people in power out of the goodness of their heart?3) We have something on them, Ala dirty pics of a zorkinosh in some place it shouldn’t be.
Who the hell cares? We cant show them to anyone, so what are we gonna do? Broadcast them to space and hope someone sees them (mind you they dont know to be looking), or give us your vastly superior technology? This is the equilivant of a mouse holding an elephant hostage because it has a pic of who took all the peanuts. Squish, probelm solved.4) They are in a war and need our help. (Ala startrek)
What the hell do we have to offer them? Spitwads? We could send people, you know, extra ground troops, but we cant support our military operation here on Earth right now. And even if we could, wouldnt that require massive amounts of people, and reveal the plan? If we are offering them people, why are we only offering them a few people? This is war.5) We are being culled and the gov is in collusion to keep it underwraps as we are a food source. (Ie wrathe in Stargate atlantas)
creepy. I guess this would work, all the people dissapearing and never being heard from again are really the main dish. The reported “probing” is really more like a turkey baster, but they were rotten for some reason or another, and returned. This in a sick way makes sense, and the Gov would go along to make sure it wasnt any of their kids being culled. (damn, pass the tin foil hat) But then again, why not just take your fill and leave? Why worry about how your food feels about being food?6) They are researchers, and study us like field biologists study kangaroo rat colonies in Austrailia. (southpark)
So they are benevelent and interested in “violent supersticious monkeys” with no real useful technology. Now we are more akin to their pets, or maybe we are really just as interstellar “mirkat mannor”. This I could see. They obviously would have to be scientific, inquisitive, and exploratory to build the ships and all the necessary tech to get here. It would explain why they dont take anything or show themselves. Why not study us? We go to Antartica to study Penguin populations. Next time you are behind closed doors, doing something to your significant other just think “Smile, you are on intersteller TV!”

July 24, 2008 at 4:36 PM #246321afx114ParticipantI agree with SDE, however, you also have to consider that no one would have imagined, even as short as 10 years ago, that we’d be socializing online, carrying on discussions about the housing market in a virtual space interfaced by a tiny computer in our pocket that, by the way, also allows us to speak to each other via invisible airwaves without cords. All the things we take for granted today were unthinkable even a generation ago. Moore’s law just keeps on truckin’ and it’s showing no signs of slowing down. Even the most hardcore science fiction authors can’t conceive what kind of technologies we’ll be seeing 10, 20, 50 years from now.
So while the odds are seemingly impossible, I’m not quite ready to rule anything out just yet.
