O/T Mexico City International Airport

I’m hoping to get some advice on an “off topic” matter.

In late June, my wife & I will travel to Cancun with our 2 kids (1 & 3 yrs). We’ll depart from LAX & have a 3 hours lay-over (both on the way to Cancun & on the return home) at Mexico City. Since we’re with 2 young kids & have a long lay-over, I have some questions for the people who have been to this airport:

– Are there any “activities” at the airport to keep children occupied ?

– I searched the web for some images of this airport. From the pictures, the inside of the terminal looks as modern/clean as any American airport. Is that true ?

– Also, we’ll be flying on Aeromexico Airlines. Does anyone have any experience with this airline ? How does it compare to the U.S. Airlines ?

– Since the flight from LAX will arrive on the International Terminal, I think we’ll need to go to a “domestic terminal” for the connecting flight to Cancun. Is this easy to do ?

Any other advices will be greatly appreciated.

The Mexico City airport is as nice as most in the states and is nicer than some (the awful Las Vegas airport comes to mind). There’s not a lot for kids to do, just the typical shops and restaurants and stuff.

Aeromexico is a good airline. I’ve flown it a few times and they are fine. Better service than most US airlines.

One funny thing about the Mexico City airport is that there are these huge 20 foot billboards lining the roads in and out of the place advertising expensive consumer goods, high end real estate and financial services. If you look closely, you can see cracks between the billboards and behind those are some very poor and run-down neighborhoods.

funny coincidence, I just returned from Mexico City, was there for the long weekend.

Benito Juarez airport is quite modern, nothing to worry about. Not sure about activities for children.

I flew Mexicana airlines and the service was MUCH better than any domestic US airline, sorry to say.

Not sure about Aeromexico but Mexicana departed from Tom Bradley International Terminal. The signs should be clearly marked for the airline.

Enjoy Cancun, it’s a pretty nice place..especially the Nichupte Lagoon at night!

– You most likely will take a shuttle to the terminal on arrival. So the short answer is “yes” you will need to find a different terminal. It is not overly difficult, especially if you have plenty of time.

You will find English is widely spoken in the terminal. I would also add please keep track of your valuables and children at all times.

If you have extended layover there are some incredible cultural sites in Mexico City. Just be careful. Use airport taxi, etc.

And one other thing, thank God you have time. You will have to pass thru Mexican customs. Be patient.
