ParticipantCould it be that our society is failing our most disadvantaged citizens? Out of sight, out of mind.
I have a Black friend who is an aerospace engineer. He went to high-school in Chicago and most of his classmates were Asian-Americans.

ParticipantIt’s tragic because it’s almost as if all the talk about engineering jobs being exported overseas has caused people to not go into those fields. Truth is there is still a huge shortage. And Americans have always been more inclined to go into business, law, etc. anyway.

ParticipantA lot of good engineers make the transition from 50k to 100k + salaries in 5-10 years. I made it.
they can afford the median house in san diego. assume the spouse works in a 20-40k job.
the point is that there are not too many people making that transition since outsourcing began in 2002.

ParticipantSocalmortgageguy answered this in his latest post.
Check out http://www.housingbubblecasualty.com/
and read what he has to say about average folks buying median-priced homes on average incomes.quote from his post:
“I by no means saw the potential for thousands of the 6-figure jobs that would be needed to purchase the hundreds and hundreds of homes that were for sale “starting at 400k”.”August 4, 2006 at 3:06 PM #30713sdrealtor
ParticipantMy guess is that this board is heavily weighted toward people working in hi tech/engineering. I know alot of people that make alot of money and few are engineers. We need to remember that not everyone in SD with a good job works in these fields.

Participantwe (incl my wife) make a lot of $$$ compared to median salary. yet we feel nervous about our future. we are concerned about incurring huge debts.
what see i is a populace that is largely not interested in their or their kids future.

ParticipantSD has been a place where businessmen in the Real Estate related fields have done well. I remember the people involved with S&L and development in the late 1980s. The speculation is all over today so I wonder how RE related businesses will fare in the coming RE crash.
