Allan, I’m with you on the parental responsibility thing. But, as I mentioned on an earlier post, Lisa just doesn’t seem to realize that the kids ARE her responsibility. The disconnect is alarming. Her affect is one of “who are these kids, and how did they get here”. What really makes the whole effect bizarre is that they all look like her – her son’s face is a carbon copy of hers.
It’s difficult to tell from a heavily-edited TV show like SN, but, overall, they seemed to be pretty nice kids. It’s a shame.
Eavesdropper: Please forgive my putting on my armchair psychologist hat for a moment, but it looks like Lisa suffers from extreme narcissism. I’d imagine she’s more about the appearances than the reality, as evidenced by the “custom home” and getting her kids “noticed” and her husband’s successful “insurance business” (which has all the hallmarks of being a franchise operation at best).
I think someone told her that she needed children to complete the “happy family” picture, so she had them. You certainly don’t get the sense that she wants them, or even understands what it means to be a parent, but you have the definite sense that she understands image, perception and spin.
According to her posting in the Comments section of the PE, she “wrote” the Press-Enterprise article so that Barack Obama, the President of the United States, would become aware of the fraud being perpetrated by the banks. Think about that one for a second. Her cheese has either slid completely off the cracker, or she genuinely believes that Obama is sitting down every evening by the fireside with a copy of the Press-Enterprise and, once he reads this article, he will spring into action on her behalf and the rest of the “victims”. Kinda scary when you think about it. Talk about the shallow end of the gene pool.

January 11, 2010 at 9:53 PM #501283eavesdropperParticipantAllan, I think your “armchair” diagnosis is spot-on. I’d venture to say that when you open up the DSM-IV, they’ve got Lisa’s headshot beside the description/criteria of “narcissistic personality disorder”.
The really scary thing is that, based on the way a lot of parents are “raising” their spawn these days, we have a lot of Lisa clones to look forward to in the future. Possible etiological factors in NPD?
–Overindulgence and overvaluation by parents
–Valued by parents as a means to regulate their own self-esteem
–Excessive admiration that is never balanced with realistic feedback
–Unpredictable or unreliable caregiving from parents
–Severe emotional abuse in childhood
–Being praised for perceived exceptional looks or talents by adults
–Excessive praise for good behaviors in childhoodThese are the kids to whom we are passing along massive national debt, plus responsibility for the aging Baby Boomers (myself included)? It doesn’t look like a pleasant retirement’s in my future. Or, for that matter, any form of retirement. Aside from the obligatory dirt nap, of course.
Had to laugh at your Obama fireside scenario, and chose number 2 as to Lisa’s state of mind (although I believe that Lisa’s cheese has been in short supply for a long time). Unfortunately, I think that there is monumental overcrowding in that shallow gene pool. Let’s face it: when a nation’s perception of how things work in the world is based largely on today’s ceaseless diet of “reality” television, and critical thinking is virtually extinct, the “fireside” scenario doesn’t seem so improbable. I know that I’ve cleared my calendar so as to be available for the live televised coverage of Lisa receiving the 11th hour phone call from the White House while Rahm Emanuel and Tim Geithner are outside her front door with balloons and an oversized cardboard check.
