Have you been to South Park, downtown San Diego, or Carlsbad lately? Boutiques?
Honest to God, boutiques? Sorry pal, I live in the real world – I’m a 99%er. Ain’t nobody in my world got time for boutiques.

I have been a member on Piggingto’ns for over 7 years, and I thought I would go out on a limb and post my experience living in Temecula. It was horrible and boring!
It’s the above comment I find really disturbing.
First of all, there’s an implied assumption that in reality I would be living in Del Mar (or other coastal area) if I only could. That’s not the case at all. I’ve never been overly impressed with Carlsbad, Del Mar, Encinitas, etc…for one thing I don’t want to live around phony’s.
The worst and by far most offensive part of this comment is the very last sentence – Temecula is “horrible and boring”.
For all of it’s faults, I feel very fortunate to live in the United States, and in particular Temecula. There are far worse places in the world than Temecula; far worse. Konakai, you make me sick.
December 18, 2013 at 9:10 PM #769268spdrunParticipantPeople in coastal Carlsbad didn’t strike me as terribly phony — first time I was in SD (since childhood) was in 2009, and I visited a friend who was staying in an apartment complex within shouting distance of the beach. Rent was cheap, under a grand a month for a 1 bedroom, you could hear train’s klaxons whenever you opened the bedroom window, and most of the other residents of the complex were either normal middle-class people or student/surfer types. Didn’t seem pretentious to me at all.
As to my view of CA, I’d strongly PREFER to live somewhere near the beach, ideally within walking distance. Even if I have to pay a bit more for it, sacrifice space, or maybe rent vs buying. Being able to walk over for a swim or sit in a cafe with view of the water would make the other compromises in CA worth it to me.

And it goes without saying there is nothing wrong with that – but it’s not for everybody.
I like going to the beach once or twice a year, and that’s all I need. Even if I don’t make it to the beach in a given year it’s no big deal/loss for me personally. I can take it or leave it.
I value:
*Good schools for my kids
*Affordable housing
*Clean Air
*Clean water
*Recreational Opportunities
*Low Crime
*Parks and sports fieldsThose are the things Temecula over-delivers on, San Diego doesn’t unless you happen to be a 1%er.
Why is it so hard for you 1%er coastal elites to get that? Yes, we know you’re better than us (valley of the dirt people).
Yes, I know there’s class warfare, and yes I know you’re winning.

Keep in mind the job market in so cal is *VERY* competitive.
December 19, 2013 at 5:34 AM #769277cato1974ParticipantThanks again for all the input guys.. much to think about..
I guess the Temecula discussion will continue on.
I have been offered the position..I just have to decide if I’m going to take it.
A big part of that decision depends upon where we live and if my commute will be tolerable or not. My number one priority is to be around my daughters as much as possible and a super long commute will dampen those prospects.
Like others, I want great schools, safe areas, people who value their community, clean air, access to conveniences and amenities ( my wife does like big box stores! ) and safe open spaces for my kids and dogs to enjoy the outdoors.
No matter where we live, we do not succumb to Affluenza and have no need to keep up with the Jones’. We drive >10 year old japanese cars and shop at Target and value a sense of community and people’s values over their material possessions.
Hopefully we can find an area where those are valued as well 🙂
Thanks again!December 19, 2013 at 6:32 AM #769278scaredyclassicParticipantPlaces aren’t boring people are boring.
December 19, 2013 at 6:35 AM #769280scaredyclassicParticipantIf I had won the recent lottery I would not have moved. But I might have built a better fence.
The beach is kind of dumb. All wet and sandy.
Temecula I am ever loyal to thee

I don’t think OP have to worry about that. There’s very little high paying jobs in fallbrook, we are likely looking at a healthcare related or management level position thay was ALREADY offered to him.
I would say a commute from Temecula to Fallbrook does make more sense. He should consider one of those estate type homes west of the I15.
February 12, 2014 at 7:35 AM #770838cato1974ParticipantHello all,
Just an update on our plans. I have decided to accept a position offered to me in Escondido rather than Fallbrook which makes the prospect of commuting slightly more palatable :). We will be moving in August and are actively looking at properties in Del Sur ( Presidio/Marston) as well as the Van Daele homes in the Lakes. These are all new builds and will run me anywhere from 950-1.3 depending on which community we go with. Mello Roos are rather prohibitive but I am hoping to get the value returned through the school system. We will also be looking for resales in the Crosby, Del Sur and 4s although inventory is scarce. Just wanted to fill you in and thank you all for your invaluable advice. If you have any other suggestions I’m all ears/eyes!

Rent a condo with a few bedrooms in a decent school district, then buy something (new or not) between Thanksgiving and New Years’ when the market is usually dead slow and deals are better.
Actually living there w/o buying allows you to get acquainted with the area and there’s no pressure to buy by a drop-dead date, which improves your negotiating mojo.
February 12, 2014 at 6:00 PM #770869joecParticipantJust as a FYI for the Poway Unified School District, if you rent or live in a place NOT in a MR district, you will not be able to attend any of the “newer” MR schools. This is certainly something to consider as I’m sure people who rent “hoping” to get in are going to get a surprise that they may have to drive 20 minutes away to the non-MR place.
Also, they are building a new K-8 school opening this year that is only funded by certain MR CFD areas so you’d need to check the area/ask the homebuilder what CFD this is in if you wanted to attend that school.
Lastly, just because you paid MR doesn’t mean you will end up going to go to your neighborhood school…They have all pretty much been all full so figure out your plans prior if you don’t get lucky. There was some news articles of some people (50+ families) that bought 1+ mil homes in PUSD that had to drive to Adobe Bluffs (25 years old now) like 20-30 minutes away even though they lived directly across the street from the Elementary school…
Again, all the schools are decent, but I think some people prefer the newer schools for probably more selective families (higher income since home prices have gone up from 30 years ago), newer building, etc…, possibly better teachers since when a new school opens, they can pick and choose which teachers to hire I believe.
Hope that helps…Also, PUSD school enrollment happens in May I think.

Cheers
Congrats on the Escondido position, it will be much better for your commute overall. I use to commute from 4S to Escondido and it was a very easy commute. Just remember to exit before Valley as the traffic from the 78 bottleneck ends up trapping you at Valley.
I would try to aim for the slightly older Santa Fe Valley gated community homes adjacent to 4S to escape the crazy MR in Del Sur. Ivy Gates would be a good option for you. You might also want to include north Poway as well as northern RB such as the Trails, lots of docs that work in Escondido end up living there.
Best of luck!
February 12, 2014 at 9:22 PM #770874duchessParticipantA resale in the Crosby would get you San Dieguito schools. You wouldn’t have to worry about getting into the crowded Poway district. We chose the Crosby because our oldest will start kindergarten at Solana Santa Fe by the time our house is done. If you have young kids call the schools in the areas you’re considering and ask how full they are.
February 13, 2014 at 7:11 AM #770886cato1974ParticipantThanks for the further information guys. I definitely will be calling the schools to find out how full they are. I know that the new K-8 school has already past their deadline for residency application submission. I will also check out the resales in Crosby and in Ivy Gate and Trails as mentioned. Thanks again!
