PD, I can’t speak for what is going on with our ground forces over there because I am not aware of the conops. I would not be surprised if we are overregulating ourselves as you imply.
However, I think we are all missing the real point. The point is we are not equipped, as a military or as a nation, of fighting a guerilla war. No offense to the ground troops but the true strength of our military, and our only true advantage as a military, is technology. This is where most of the defense spending has been focused for many years, through both Republican and Democratic Presidents and Congress. I am talking about advance fighter aircraft, smart munitions, ballistic missile defense, advanced communications systems and satellites, etc.
We do not have the largest Army, and we definitely don’t have the will as a nation to suffer heavy casualties for a dubious cause. And even with our superior weapon systems, If we were ever forced to engage a real threat, such as China for example, we would rely heavily on the support of our allies. The fact that we have alienated many of our allies with this Iraq non-sense makes me even more concerned for the day the shit really hits the fan.
