As much as I’d like to live in a custom house, I’m not wealthy enough to have that choice.
Realtors can help find that “perfect” house for you. Just like the fashion consultant can find the “perfect” look for you. But the majority of people could dispense from the extra expense.
Honestly, if you buy a track house, any plan 3R, 4R would do just the same. If you buy a downtown condo, the 10th floor might do just a well as the 13th floor. Personally, I would not pay a big premium for small differences.
But taste is in the eyes of the beholder. I know people who spent a lot of money remodeling their houses with crown moulding, custom paint, tile, even the cabinet door knobs, etc… Suddendly, they think that their house is worth $50k more. If I had to buy such house I’d ask for a 50k price reduction to undo the uglyness.
asianautica is right that for track homes, small differences don’t justify the big premiums. If you have resale value in mind, the only thing that really matters is price per square foot.
September 14, 2006 at 12:39 PM #35342sdrealtorParticipantI agree that there shouldnt be huge differences in very similar properties. But $10K to $20K is not a huge difference in my book to get the house you like better. AN said he would rather save to $10 to 20K and buy the cheaper one. In the same breathe said he drives a relatively expensive car which is the most rapidly depreciating asset in the world in good times and bad.
September 14, 2006 at 1:13 PM #35349PerryChaseParticipantsdrealtor, yeah 20k is not much. When i bought years ago, I paid more to get the 2 story house with just a 1-story neighbor on 1 side.
September 14, 2006 at 1:22 PM #35346anParticipantbalasr, in pure financial sense, yes, it would make more sense to buy a $15k civic. It would make even more sense to buy a $3k used civic. It would also make a lot more financial sense to live in Texas than San Diego as well since houses there are 1/3 the price if not a lot more. The reason why I buy a G35 is the same reason why I want to live in San Diego. I want the best for myself/family for the price I can afford. With that said, I want to live in San Diego and want to drive a sport car because that’s what I want in my life. So I’ll pay a premium for it. But that doesn’t mean I want to pay more for a 330Ci while I can get something cheaper and be 95% just as good. That’s the same as buying a track house that have less option or different options that have less premium.
sdrealtor, my oil change cost me $15 every 3 month or 3000 miles. Sorry but I don’t drive a Ferrari. In regards to fast depreciating asset, I don’t intend to sell this car until it break down 10-15 years from now, so depreciation means nothing to me. I highly doubt cars are the fastest depreciating asset by any stretch of imagination. I can guarantee you the electronics in your house depreciate so much more faster than the fastest depreciating car. To you, $10k-$20k might be small, but to me, it is not. If I think $10-$20k is small, I would have just bought the 300Ci or M3 already. To me, it also doesn’t matter if it’s $5 or $5000, if I can save $5, I would do everything I can to get that discount. Bottom line is, I don’t like to over pay or anything. That doesn’t mean I don’t want nice things, I just want nice things at the best price. We’re also assuming that the owner who has the nicer house would not go lower than the one w/ less attractive house. That might not always be the case.
PerryChase, that’s exactly what I’m saying. I don’t know about others, but the house I can afford to buy are tract homes. So the difference is very small. So I rather save $10k-$20k and do my own remodeling to my own taste rather than pay it up front for upgrades I might not like 100%.
September 14, 2006 at 1:25 PM #35350(former)FormerSanDieganParticipantI just did an analysis of the cost to purchase a G35 Coupe and discovered that the price of a new G35 coupe has risen by 7.4% over the last 4 years. This is well above inflation and is not sustainable. I think that it will revert to the mean so I’m planning on selling mine now and waiting it out a couple years to buy when the price gets more in line with the underlying fundamentals.

Wow, really? I should follow you and sell mine too. Or maybe I should hang on to mine and it’ll be worth a bazillion dollar one day. Supply and demand, right? There are Billions of people and only a few thousand coupes :).September 14, 2006 at 1:35 PM #35352sdrealtorParticipantLooks like this thread has run its course.
Move on people…nothing to see…
September 14, 2006 at 1:37 PM #35353(former)FormerSanDieganParticipantan – I think we should all start applying economics to all our daily choices now. I could go out to lunch today, maybe In-and-Out or Rubio’s, but I think it makes more economic sense to eat dog food or just dumpster dive for some day-old bread. Who cares what it tastes like, that’s too subjective. Rational economic thinking will always come out in the long run. How can you objectively quantify taste anyway ?

September 14, 2006 at 1:40 PM #35355anParticipantNah, dog food is too expensive for me. Rice and soy sauce everyday for me. Natural diet plan too :).
September 14, 2006 at 2:01 PM #35359powaysellerParticipantAN, you don’t have to defend your decision about your car. sdrealtor has a history of trying to sling mud to throw people off track. Whether it’s congratulating me on my house burning in a fire, dissing your choice of car as not financially sound and trying to question your manhood, looking up my previous house sale and falsely accusing me of lying to my buyers about its square footage, knocking Boston_OC_Renter for his sales success, slamming SD Realtor (the nice one), questioning my ethics for selling a house, the list just goes on and on.
One thing I like about the piggington blog is the high caliber of posters, which keeps the discourse intellectual and civil. People prefer to debate the topics, not the person. Unfortunately, this last post by sdrealtor crossed the line, once again, of civil piggingtonian discourse, so it isn’t even worthy of a response. It’s nobody damn business what kind of car you drive!

Cool, then I drive a G35, too !
(this is the part where everyone else stands up and says “me too”)September 14, 2006 at 2:10 PM #35363lendingbubblecontinuesParticipantYou guys should see my penis, er, surrogate penis. It can go for a long time without stopping and doesn’t need any additives. Long, black, and smooth…it even has a sun-roof.
September 14, 2006 at 2:30 PM #35370speedingpulletParticipantLOL!
Now, put it back in your trousers…
