Leaving SD for Orlando

You sound a little wistful there, Cardiff. I left California two years ago. I too had mixed feelings about leaving. After a few months of feeling mostly loss, I began to feel better. Within another short time, I was very pleased I had moved, and I still feel what way.

You will do fine. Pick the best things about Orlando for you, and make the most of them. If I were in your shoes, I would enjoy choosing, buying, and then living in a very nice affordable home of my own in a good area. Can’t do that in San Diego.

I was in St. Petersberg for a mini vacation and stayed at Don Cesar. It was really nice. I found some of the people were on the strange side. You’re not far from those mermaids.

It’s tough to make it here and I don’t fault you at all. If I had to go somewhere, Florida is a decent option.

When Cuba opens up and low-cost flights are available, it’ll be a great vacation destination for Americans. I can see people flying to Havana just like we fly to Las Vegas for the weekend.

I think that one reason retirees like Florida is that they can take the frequent cruises to the Caribbean.

There is a redneck type culture in Florida — kinda like Dukes of Hazzards type with people driving muscle cars and trucks with gun racks. Speed traps are notorious in Florida. Small towns make a living fining tourists driving through.

As mentioned above, I’m sure many of us (ourselves included) have fantasized about leaving CA many times. We’re stuck here because we were born in L.A. and have family obligations, so will have to be here for awhile.

You’re not the first person to mention the difficulty of finding good friends in California. I think it has a lot to do with the fact that California is a very transitory state. I think only 1/3 of the population is native, so most people here come from somewhere else, and really don’t have the kind of bonds that are fostered when you have lots of childhood friends and live in the same place your entire life. I’ve been in San Diego since early 1998, and have not found the kind of close friendships I had in L.A. (with all my childhood friends). Maybe that’s why we all congregate here on the blogs. It’s a place where “everybody knows your name” (even if it’s just a virtual username).

You will probably miss San Diego for a bit, but the fact that you don’t have any family ties or lifelong memories will probably make leaving easier. I’ll bet you end up making more and better friends in your first year in FL than you were able to here in five years. It sounds like you’re very community-minded, and that’s a trait that will make you friends no matter where you go.
