With regards to Ph.D.’s, they really have to look out when they lose their job whether it’s because of company going belly up, moving, or having a murder…I mean merger. Due to the specialization of many of the areas, the biotech community may be too small in San Diego if you lose your job at the Ph.D. level.
BTW, I lived next door to a doctor (in CV) who was forced to sell (at a profit, but priced way below market for quick sale because of relocation), so the profession doesn’t always matter.July 9, 2008 at 3:49 PM #236378DoofratParticipantWith regards to Ph.D.’s, they really have to look out when they lose their job whether it’s because of company going belly up, moving, or having a murder…I mean merger. However, with oversea outsourcing of R&D going on, they will be greatly affected.
With the likely outcome that Demos sitting in both white house and capitol hill, I think the R&D outsourcing will take up a notch pretty soon.[/quote]
Most folks in biotech like myself got priced out a while ago. The ones who have homes are mostly those who have owned for a while already in areas older than Carmel Valley. High Tech relos would likely do more damage to San Diego RE due to higher pay for engineers IMHO.

July 10, 2008 at 7:59 AM #236634hugoParticipant“The foreclosure problem is getting worse and will stay with us well into the next decade,” Mark Zandi, chief economist for Moody’s Economy.com in West Chester, Pennsylvania, said in an interview. “The job market is eroding and homeowners have less equity. Lenders are much less willing to work with you if you’ve got negative equity, and you’re more likely to give up your house if you’re deeply underwater.”
