[quote=Allan from Fallbrook]Gandalf: I completely agree with you on the GOP. They’ve gone well beyond the politics of opposition and are now being simply obstructionist for the purpose of being obstructionist.
When a oafish buffoon like Rush Limbaugh becomes the de facto leader of the GOP, you know something is seriously wrong. Unless and until the GOP decides to find it’s way back to true conservative values and jettison the right wing whackos like Limbaugh, and Palin and the evangelicals, well, they’ll remain a party on the sidelines and justifiably so.

I don’t know Allen. If our economy falls hard enough there will be enough pissed off people that I suspect the GOP could get a lot of new voters. IMO, predicting the economy will get much worse is an easy bet and Obama keeps putting his foot in his mouth and doing the wrong things. Limbaugh and his ilk are the most dangerous internal dynamic to the US because they appeal to the lowest common denominator in human nature and could lead to a radicalization of a good portion of the population. They are positioning themselves for a big “I told you so” which in my estimation will be correct, even if for the wrong reasons. I’ve been keeping tabs on the hard right media and they smell blood. A psychologically traumatized population is dangerous and a mass involuntary reduction in lifestyle could do that.

Wen Jiabao, China’s prime minister, issued a veiled warning to America yesterday to maintain control over its economy in the latest sign the global economic crisis is testing the most important bilateral relationship in the world.
In forthright remarks on the intertwined nature of US and Chinese finances, Wen told a news conference he was “worried” about Beijing’s holdings of American government debt. Analysts believe China has $1trn (£716bn) of US treasury bills in its coffers, implying a delicate balance between two powers whose fortunes are interlinked.
Keep in mind this is after we were caught spying on them and just before that Hillary was over there with hat in hand looking for handouts.

Sinclair Lewis, from the novel “It Can’t Happen Here”.
That’s the reason that Limbaugh scares me as much as he does. That sort of demagoguery will find a larger and larger audience as things get worse and people look for someone or something to blame.
Which is why Obama scares me as well. He’s been made out by an adoring media and a gullible populace to be the new messiah. When he’s exposed as being as human as the rest of us, and his proposed salvation is shown to be false, there is gonna be hell to pay.
