Well there is another thing I would add and that is these days apartments are run by large corporations who will not look at an individuals situation but rely on pristine credit scores, (that is harder and harder to come by these days), where as an individual landlord can see let say OK this guy got foreclosed on but he has steady employment etc…
Just saying there may be a lot more to these things than show up in news articles .

January 7, 2010 at 5:45 PM #499926SD TransplantParticipantMy lease was up in Dec 09, and my office didn’t even bother notifying me about a renewal. First time in about 4.5 years. I’m month to month w/out a contract. What’s not to love? Also, they gave me a free month prior for a 12 month lease.
The building next door has the same apartment empty…..

1) Through 06 – 08 banks gave money to developers speculating on the need for more rental units due to the downturn in housing. So, there’s excess space out there.
2) People doubling up in apartments instead of living alone. People take roommates when the economy dips.
3) People move back home, or move in with family.January 7, 2010 at 6:52 PM #499951CAwiremanParticipantFrom Market place today –
