Even though my wife and I work in film and TV in Hollywood, we’ve always driven fairly conservative, gas efficient
cars–unlike most of our peers in the business who have commensurately high incomes. We had a couple of SUV’s when
the kids were younger, but we always seemed to use the smaller cars more often. Now a friend wants to sell me his Tesla, and I may bite, because it may prove to be the best of both worlds–a sports car that is fuel efficient. He was one of the first on the list for it, and now has to let it go because of a divorce and some financial problems. Should be an interesting ride.

1. Dharmagirl: I think the “I do it for my kids” argument has little to do with carrying capacity as safety. There are 40,000 road fatalities in the US, and people believe that a big car will offer some protection. In fact the “Millionaire Mind” bestseller by professors Danko and Stanley found that the (smart, self made) millionaires they studied were far more likely to drive large cars than other people.
2. I think that large SUVs look terribly ugly. They are morbidly OBESE cars, take up too much room, disproportionately pollute the air, and are in general the symptom of a sick society obsessed with consumerism and supersize-ism

May 6, 2008 at 2:50 PM #199837trexParticipantI used to think this way. I own a small SUV, but I walk or ride my bike to work every day. Haven’t started the car since last Friday.
But if we use less gas, then the price goes down, so the Mexicans and Chinese and Indians will use more. Since they don’t have catalytic converters, we are then all screwed.
So perhaps we should all drive Hummers.
